Why does treating bacteria/clostridia improve bowel movements?

My son has been taking Flagyl to treat bacteria/clostridia for about a

week now. His bowels movements have improved TREMENDOUSLY...before

constipation, now it's like adult poop :) (sorry if too much info :) I

have read people comment on this before and I just wondered why...

What exactly does clearing out bacteria do?? Any other great effects I

should be looking for?
