Bessie,

That was a really good answer.

Meredith when I first became a TFC years ago I only got this once or

twice and my response was, " Would you prefer to transplant someone with

cervical or breast cancer? " I also informed the coordinators that the

insurance company is like a bank and the authorization is like a check.

I have not had any problems since.....

It is now a requirement for the initial and annual evals across ALL

transplant programs

Good luck

Help me, please; my nurses are making me crazy!

Every time I inform the nurse coordinator that the insurance has

requested to see a “recent mammo & pap†for a patient who I am

trying to get authorized for liver txp (either initially or to recertify

txp auth for continued listing), all I get is flakâ€|

Check out this comment I just got via email from one of my nurses:

“Why do they keep asking US for this when it is her PCP office’s

job??â€

Do the other centers out there require these tests be on record in the

patient’s chart if the woman is over 50???!!

My goodness! I would think that we want to know this stuff!!!!!

I’m just so frustrated & I want to know if this is a part of other

centers’ protocol & how you handle things like thisâ€|

Thanks!

As a renal transplant nurse coordinator who does too much with the financial

end, yes. We want to know pap and mammo status. Its basic cancer screening. The

reason the nurse is probably saying that is, the transplant center does not

order it because the PCP should be doing it on a yearly basis anyway. The pt

should be proactive and get their own pap and mammo every year anyway. The nurse

is probably requesting it from the PCP .. We will order the pap and mammo as

part of the eval if the pt and PCP has not kept up with the yearly screening,

which happens ALL the time. .

The nurse may be overworked. Are you able to access the electronic medical

record or hard copy and get the mammo and pap report yourself? Mammos are over

40 and under with a family history of breast cancer. Paps are for everyone with

a uterus and GYN if they have ovaries only. If they have had a total

hysterectomy, we ask GYN to clear them once for transplant (meaning no female

parts to get cancer)
