Guest guest
Shari, Here are some web sites and books that might be helpful to you as you are learning about VB. Order the books " Teaching Language to children with Autism and related Disorders " and " The Assessment of Basic Language and Learner Skills " by Drs. Partington and Sundberg. You can order both of those from Different Roads to Learning. (www.difflearn.com) Also, look into attending an Intro to Verbal Behavior workshop. Below is the contact info for some professionals who are doing those types of workshops across the US. Dr. Vince Carbone: www.drcarbone.net Drs. Sundberg and Partington: www.behavioranalysts.com Dr. Pat McGreevy: www.behaviorchange.com You might also want to get in touch with the Association for Behavior Analysis to see if they can help you as well. They might be about to help you find a certified behavior analyst or an associate behavior analyst in your area. There web site is: www.wmich.edu.aba Hope this helps. Jenn
Guest guest
Hi everyone, I am new to the list and to this method of treatment. Where do we start? Our son, n, is 4 yrs old, diagnosed PDD- NOS, ASD, High functioning Autism, you know the drill. He has some speech (can verbalize requests very well, and that is about the limit) and attends a PPI program 4 days a week, plus OT 1 x/week, is part of a Play therapy program. At PPI he gets some DTT but maybe for only 20 minutes. What is the first step in starting ? Verbal behavior is the direction I'd like to head, that seems to be where he is truly lacking. I live in Southeast Michigan (a suburb of Detroit) and would appreciate any hints on starting this up. Thanks in advance to everyone, I look forward to participating on this list. Guest guest
You will find all the info you need at the nids or Dr. Goldberg website. They have a list of typical symptoms and the recommended therapy. Good luck,CW Kim GIll <kim.gill@...> wrote: This is all very overwhelming to me. I have for a long year wondered about a viral/immune aspect to our son's diagnosis. I never pursued the protocol, I was just looking at DAN. But, after researching more of the viral components to the disorder, it seemed to relate to my son even more. Can someone point me in the right direction so that I can see what the Protocol is? Specifically, what steps need to be done? I recently saw a video of a boy diagnosed with autism. He did anti- viral meds and within 21 days...the improvement was dramatic. I noted on our test results from a year ago viral problems, but nothing was ever looked at in terms of treating the viral issues with our son. Where to I begin? Please? Thanks. Guest guest
Hi Kim, Welcome. The DAN approach tends to look more into metabolic anomalies in our kids while the philosophy is immune based and deals with viral, allergies and yeast to begin with. Dr. Goldberg varies the protocol somewhat depending on the child's lab work which is done extensively to begin with and then monthly. We had started seeing a DAN doctor for a very short while early in our journey with our then 3 year old son. We didn't go far with the protocol as it didn't seem to fit my son. Luckily we found out about and went to see Dr. Goldberg just before my sons 4th Birthday. My son's HHV6 titer (Herpes virus 6) was 1:1280 with a range reference of <1:20. His IgE (measure of allergens in the blood) was 2680 with a range reference of 0-144. We had already started the GFCF diet, so we continued and Dr. G started my son on an antiviral, then an antifungal. We saw HUGE gains right off the start. I wish the success continued to be that quick however, in the 3 years my son has been a patient he has gone from an echolailic boy with poor eye contact to a nearly 7 year old who is academically at the top of his class, plays hockey, goes to Beavers and plays piano all without an aid. His language is age appropriate although he still at times struggles with word retrieval. His journey continues although he is quite indistinguishable from his peers. Sometimes it felt like one step forward 2 steps back, but each and every back peddle I trusted Dr. Goldberg when he assured me my son would be brighter on the other side. He hasn't been wrong yet. We continue with Dr. Goldberg via a monthly phone conference and my local pediatrician rewrites any prescriptions as we are in Canada. I have not regretted for one second the chance we gave my son by following my gut instincts of what made sense and didn't for my son. While we do without alot of things to continue to afford Dr. Goldberg's care, I can't begin to put a price on seeing my son play appropriately with peers in the school yard at recess. Not to mention he is a heck of alot healthier then he ever was! Best of luck to you as you venture into perhaps a new path for your son. Thoroughly checkout the www.neuroimmunedr.com and the www..net sites for alot of excellent information. Lori , Oakville, Ontario Where to start? This is all very overwhelming to me.
