Hi fellowlisters,

I need help for my 7 yr. old. How do I teach him about nouns, verbs and the

main idea of a story? He knows a lot of sight words and he can read.

However, I would like to break down sentences so he will understand the

parts. For example do I tell him that a noun is a naming word for a person,

place or thing, and show him pictures of each?

They SD didn't work on this with him. He was in first grade and I felt these

things should have been worked on. Consequently, I will be doing these kinds

of things during the summer.

Please provide me with some help with reference materials I can use or what

programs you are using with you little people. Is anyone else dealing with

this problem.

My son is very good at reading words, phrases and little books. The

comprehension part is a big problem for him. I feel if I can break down the

pieces, perhaps it will be easier for him.

Forgive me for rambling, but I am a little stressed right about now.

I know you all are a great source for help. I thank you in advance for any

help, comments, recommendations that you will provide.

Warm regards,

Hi -

We will also be working on these skills for the coming year. Since all of them

are part of the 2nd grade curriculum, our aim is to finish these by 1 year

from now. For " Main Idea " , we will start with very short stories and use

multiple

choice worksheets that we make up ourselves, starting with one obvious choice

with the other 2 choices completely unrelated to the story. Slowly, we will

make

the other choices somewhat more possible. Also, we will slowly introduce more

complex/longer stories.

For noun & verbs, I would probably teach verbs first and use the language 'verbs

are doing words, they answer the question: what is someone doing?. Start with

a sorting task with visual labels (Verb/Doing Words) vs. Other Words. Once he

has

that, add in Nouns/Naming words.

Hope this is helpful and makes some sense.
