Guest guest
Hi , It worked fine. I just sent you $5.00 as a symbol of my appreciation for your helpful posts. dts From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Locke Sent: Saturday, December 06, 2008 9:28 PM To: Locke Subject: Payments online -- website As you know, I was interested in allowing patients to pay online...but didn't want to spend a bunch of money doing it. I think I have an answer with the free PayPal business option. I am ready to put on my statement that patients can now pay online. The would go to... https://lockefam1.ipower.com/Payment.html And then follow the directions on the webpage. Will be interesting to see who uses it. I tried it myself and it seemed to flow OK. I also managed to make the initial Payment page (which is not part of PayPal) a more secure page through my host - iPower. Anyway, if you want to see a home grown version of online payments, check it out. Locke, MD

Guest guest
Don, you are too much. :-)Thanks!Interestingly, they do have the option to put a Donation button on the website -- like if you run a blog or other service where people might want to donate. The other function I am thinking of playing with is the subscription service. You can set up a button that makes monthly payments -- forever or for a certain about of time. That would work well for those doing concierge type practice and doing a monthly charge -- this would do it automatically for you. Also, I've toyed with using the subscription/monthly payment option for patients on a payment plan.Set up a button for $25, 50, or 100/month and then have a button for 1x, 2x,...12x payments to meet their balance.I would have the front desk have the patient pay enough to make the remaining balance consistent with the # payments and monthly payment and then it would pay off automatically until done.Anyway, some interesting things to do.I'll try to let everyone know how it works out.It will probably be a cycle or 2 before I get the statements updated so patients know they can go there, but I'll tell my front desk to tell patients that want to pay that they can surf over to the website. If nothing else, this falls under the IMP idea of low/no overhead that allows a practice to offer a service for minimal cost. Also, for those not taking credit cards for whatever reason, this would be a way to jump into that without a lot of fuss. You could just do this through the internet and you can set it up to transfer monies to your bank account and get a monthly statement by e-mail from PayPal. Plus you don't even need to incorporate it into your website. You can go directly to the PayPal site to enter the charges for the patient instead of the patient doing it.I'm sure the fees are probably higher than some options, but for something I could do myself and has no ongoing fees, this is pretty good.BTW, here is what the receipt for Don's payment looked like...it gets sent to me to document payment. Normally, it would have info on Name on Account to be Paid: In this case, "gratitude" and then the Account #. I would then give this print out to my front desk to apply to the patient account like the patient had called her to use a credit card. It seems pretty slick, but it will be interesting to see if patients really want to use it. ==================================================== eCheck payment in progressDear Locke Family Medicine,Sammamish Diabetes and Lipid Clinic, PLLC has sent you an eCheck payment of $5.00 USD.It usually takes about 3-5 days for you to receive the money (estimated: 12/10/2008-12/12/2008). Guest guest
and all, The other thing that I learned when I started using credit cards is that most aren’t “qualified,” so they get charged a higher rate. Any rewards card or business card is not qualified, and is 0.5 or 1.0% higher than qualified rates. Not a big deal unless you do a lot, but something I was never aware of as a consumer. Sharon From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Locke Sent: Tuesday, December 09, 2008 9:23 AM To: Subject: RE: Payments online -- website Hi Graham, I suppose that is semantics. You are correct -- PayPal does charge for the Credit Card fees to use a credit card through their system -- so it isn't free in that sense. But there is no monthly fee for the basic business option to have the site set up and no cost (other than opportunity costs) for me to spend some time incorporating the code into my website, etc. I could be wrong, but I believe places like Medfusion and RelayHealth charge extra for the service, plus credit card fees. I suppose it's sort of like getting a " free " car -- it's not really free -- you have to put gas in it, clean it, oil, insurance, etc. I guess what I mean by free and low/no overhead for the service is.... 1. No setup fee or monthly fee to have access to the credit card service. 2. Free for me to install on my website -- others might have to have an IT person install the code into a website, so they might have to spend some monies. 3. So if I never use the service, I'm not really out any money, other than the hours used to research and install the code. I'll try to keep everyone up to date on whether patients use it. But, yes, you are correct -- the actual service of using the credit card charge is not free. I'm sure there are cheaper options for credit card charging out there, but as an online option to try out, I'm willing to try it out. If it becomes a big hit, maybe I'll try to find other options to use for online payments that are cheaper. I'm willing to pay a little extra for awhile until I see if it takes off. For what it is worth -- here is my Costco Merchant service I use vs the much more expensive PayPal option. Costco Retail Merchants 1.64% Plus 20¢ per card-swiped transaction PayPal 2.9% + $0.30 USD So, let me see -- $100 transactions x 10 visit = $1,000 Costco - 1.64% ($10.64) plus 10x0.20 ($2.00) = $12.64 PayPal - 2.9% ($29.00) plus 10x0.30 ($3.00) = $32.00 So definitely a significant difference -- paying $19.36 more per $1,000 -- or $1.94 per transaction in this scenario. Of course, if you are paying for a credit card machine or having your staff enter in credit card for the patient in the office, or needing a phone line to do the credit cards, there is some extra overhead beyond the patient who is doing this from home without any overhead for your office -- the patient supplies the computer, internet access, time to enter the info, etc. So.....not a cheap option based on the transaction fee, but cheap to set up. Website Payments Standard: Pricing The transaction prices listed are for the U.S. only. Learn more about accepting international payments. Monthly Income Per Transaction Transaction Price Example $0.00 USD - $3,000.00 USD 2.9% + $0.30 USD You’ll pay $3.20 USD on a $100.00 USD transaction. $3,000.01 USD - $10,000.00 USD 2.5% + $0.30 USD Merchant Rate qualification required You’ll pay $2.80 USD on a $100.00 USD transaction. $10,000.01 USD - $100,000.00 USD 2.2% + $0.30 USD Merchant Rate qualification required You’ll pay $2.50 USD on a $100.00 USD transaction. > $100,000.00 USD 1.9% + $0.30 USD Merchant Rate qualification required You’ll pay $2.20 USD on a $100.00 USD transaction. Guest guest
I had a rude awakening today: A charge of $139 showed up on my office bank account last month, from Merchants, the company I have a credit card account with. I have had this account for almost 3 years but dont use it: Not much call for CC payments here, and I had trouble getting the machine to connect over VOIP line. It hasnt cost me any monthly fee, until this month, $139. I called and was told this was a new, mandatory, HIPPA compliance fee, for all users, annually. They wouldnt refund it , and said there would be an early termination charge of $500 if I did so prior to my 3 year contract. Fortunately, that anniversary comes in Jan09, so this one $139 gig is all they will get me for. Has anyone else had this charge applied (I was told it was required by VISA/ MC, not Merchants). Does PayPal account require this? , To clarify, there is no minimum monthly charge for having this PayPal account? My QuickBooks one has a $9.95 minimum monthly charge, even if no transactions are done. Thanks for sharing your ideas and experience, once again! A.
