Guest guest
Tony- I went to a workshop last year on Barry Prizant's new intervention. Its called the SCERTS model. It focuses mainly on learning in everyday social settings rather than one on one all the time. Instead of useing pictures he uses physical things.toys, dolls, people, etc. You can email him and he will tell you more. I think he should be coming out with a book soon on the model but i dont think anyone is really using it yet. They are still doing research. It is just the same developmental stuff wrapped up in a slightly new presentation. It's similar to Greenspan's work, but focuses more on incidental teaching and groups. The problem is that this is the preferred model for any school that has a decent generic sped program versus a poor totally thrown together model. However, it almost NEVER works for kids like the ones on the list. It's too haphazard and rarely offers enough opportunities for a child to talk or practice any one skill, and depending on the teachers, it may be little better than a language based daycare. As Carbone once said at a conference, " When they call a classroom a language based classroom, the question you want to ask who is using the language? " Sorry, love that line. I am not a big Prizant fan. Both program providers and SLP's have put way too much faith in his work and applied it to ASD kids, and from what I can see with most of them more often than do not make many gains using this approach. It is why so many parents become disillusioned with SLP's who may be talented and dedicated, and programs that have some caring staff, but the program itself offers little.
