Guest guest
Hello everyone, I am looking into a job with a VA hospital and I have been trying to look into their insurance benefits, especially if they cover AVB. Their medical provider is BCBS federal and they contract their mental health services through a company called Magellan. I have tried to get a definitive answer on whether my son's ABA would be covered under their plan prior to leaving my current job (where it is NOT covered.) Is there anyone here who may be able to give me some insight on this? Feel free to e-mail me privately. Thanks, Danny A. in Indiana, father 4yo w/ASD
Guest guest
Hi, Danny, I am not a federal employee but here's what I can tell you about my experience with Magellan. I used to have Aetna and when I started asking them questons about ABA they referred me to Magellan whose position was basically this: CPT code 97770 or 90806 that ABA belongs to is covered when services are provided by someone who is certified/licensed in mental health. But of course none of their clinical social workers or psychiatrists/psychologists did ABA/AVB, so the issue was moot. Now I know that Microsoft pays for ABA for their employees' kids but they had to resolve the certification issue first, that is figure out whom to pay. So you may want to inquire into their out-of-network benefits perhaps because it's a pretty safe bet that they won't have anyone in-network to provide AVB. But then again, educational certificates are probably not going to be sufficient for out-of-network people to get paid, either. Hope this helps.
