Barb B Ann Arbor MI ************ Verbal Behavior Intro Workshop in Ann Arbor-Detroit area Teaching Communication to Children With Language Delays Using Applied Behavior Analysis: A Verbal Behavior Approach Presented by Esch, Ph.D. and Barbara Esch, M.A., CCC-SLP Workshop This 2-day workshop introduces participants to a behavioral approach to teaching communication skills to children with language delays. Many children diagnosed with autism or other developmental disabilities require intensive teaching in order to learn. Our goal is to help children acquire the critical skills necessary to learn without 1:1 instruction and to use language effectively, fluently, and accurately whether they are vocal or non-vocal at present. The workshop presents information and practice in: - the differences between a traditional and verbal behavior approach to teaching language - how to assess which skills should be taught - how to select first targets to teach - how to teach effectively so language skills are acquired, maintained, and generalized (errorless learning) - how to capture motivational variables to enhance skill acquisition This workshop is designed for parents, teachers, teaching assistants, speech/language pathologists, in-home trainers, as well as other family members and professionals who interact with children with language delays. It is limited to 40 participants to allow guided practice of teaching skills. * Participants are encouraged to obtain and bring a copy of The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS) by W. Partington and Mark L. Sundberg available at www.behavioranalysts.com or at (925) 210-9370, ex 100 (PST). A few copies will be available for reference at the workshop. Follow up assistance Follow-up clinic consultations will be offered to smaller groups of participants from this workshop and others who have established Verbal Behavior Programs. Consults may include skill tracking, data collection and management, program review and evaluation based on videos, maintaining teaching competencies, and natural environment training. Efforts will be made to provide individual family consultation within the group on specific issues of importance to each family pertaining to the language program they are developing. Presenters Dr. Esch is a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA) and licensed psychologist with over 25 years of experience as a consultant and teacher of children, adolescents, and adults with disabilities.
