Carol,

That is so true.. though my little one is so little I have been blessed with the most awesome Physical Therapist who is going for her doctorate. She also has a friend with an adult child who has DS.

Anyhow.. she says that research shows that all that you said is true. She said even adults in their 20's can still benefit and gain Gross motor skills as well as cognitive. It just that so many services etc stop at a particular age that this myth is perpetuated.

So NEVER stop

I would also like to encourage those with older children who feel through the gaps that to work on reading with them as well. I have been fighting for years for my child who is sixteen to be taught reading using a proper reading program and after getting fed up and filing a state complaint the school district is finally have a comprehensive reading evaluation done for her and I have been working with her at home. At home we started out with just sight words and then recently I added finger spelling and most recently we started a program at home called balanced literacy by Intellitools. She has a hard time with phonics but then she is hearing impaired as well. She is reading a small book from the balanced literacy program called Back to bed at the farm and she is doing a great job. Yes it is harder and slower going at this age but even when they are older they can learn to read. I am really looking forward to hearing the results of the reading evaluation which takes place on June 30th. -Oleson is doing the evaluation from the Virginia School for the Deaf/Blind I've read some of her seminar handouts and from what others have told me she seems very knowledgeable regarding reading with children with multiple disabilities. It's good that she is familiar with hearing impairments as well. :-) Just never stop teaching just because they get older it's a myth that they stop learning when they are older for our kids especially that is when some of them really take off. :-)

I would like to encourage you that Love and Learning is a worth while program. I do agree that it is very expensive and not produced nearly as well as Signing Time. Also you could make the cards but with 10 children I don't have the time either.

We have been using Signing Time since she was about 5 mos old and Love and Learning since she was about 12 mos old. I do believe it has been helpful for Tianna(DS) who is 22 mos. Tianna now has 75 signs, 25 sight words and 10 spoken words. We watch one video in the morning and one in the afternoon and she does not watch TV since we don't have one. I give Tianna her choice of two or three different videos. We read the little booklets although we don't get it done everyday. And I play the CD in the morning when I am making the bed in Tianna's room.

I hope Love and Learning is a Blessing to your son. If you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me. Stacey ____________________________________________________________ Discount Online Trading - Click Now!
