Guest guest
I must also add, DON'T MOVE TO NEW YORK!!! I am currently going to hell and back trying to get my son into an inclusion classroom, and all they want to do is seclude him in a class of 6 children that are non-verbal, and much lower functioning, which I feel he will not progress at all in that type of a classroom setting! My son is high functioning, more like Aspergers, and it is pure hell over here right now!! I am having a hearing for him in a few weeks, since I had to file for one to get him what I feels he deserves and NEEDS!!! Also on top of everything, the people that work for the District in my area, are so NASTY!!! Let's just say, we don't like each other very much!! LOL I have heard Wisconsin has very good schools and they are very willing to give you what your child needs. I don't know if this is accurate, but a few women on my groups have written about Wisconsin being a good place to live if you have a child with Special Needs. Had to add my 2 cents on New York!! LOL Take care, Vicki mommy to 5.7 years old HFA
Guest guest
One thing I will add about the ABA in New York, it is very hard to get!! You have a decent chance if you fight and ask for it in the classroom, but the classroom is for low functioning children. I want ABA done at home for , and that is what I am fighting for also. When I mentioned it at his IEP meeting in May, they looked at me like I was insane!!! They flat out told me, they don't give that, and I will never get it!! Well, we shall see about that!! Let them tell it to my lawyer in a few weeks!! Sorry, I had to rant again!! Vicki
Guest guest
DO NOT MOVE TO NC!! So many people hear that NC is the place to live and believe me it's not! Services here are really bad. Their favorite thing to do with children with autism is put them in a self-contained class and teach them " self-help " skills regardless of their skill level. And of course, PECS is also top on their list even with kids that are somewhat verbal. I know a few people who live in NY and there the schools pay for home-based ABA programs and also provide ABA in their early intervention preschools. You have to ask for it - they don't just volunteer it. --- jrsuellen1952 <jrsuellen1952@...> wrote: > I am looking for the best state to maybe relocate > for services > available for their child with a developmental > disability. Guest guest
NY sounds too good to be true. Do they pay for their own people or can you have a VB program? I could shoot myself because we moved to Florida from NJ where they pay for NOTHING over 3 and the pre-school is terrible!!! My husband had a few job offers in NY, so I would love an excuse to go back. Is there anyone who I could speak to about services in NY (I mean another parent)? Thanks --- " m. Guest guest
It's really sad that you have to pay for an attorney to get an appropriate education for your child. I know, been there done that. The saddest part is that your also paying for the schools attorney to fight your attorney with your taxes. Don't give up though -go get them mom! --- BSL1229@... wrote: > One thing I will add about the ABA in New York, it > is very hard to get!! Guest guest
Move to Wisconsin. Your chances of getting help are better there, but beware that many others are flooding that state. I lived there for 3 years and had all my sons ABA paid for, free. a _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
Suzanne, My son is 7 and has received ABA private school and at home after school for the 3 years and 02-03. It has been with an attorney and hearings. The few good attorneys are SWAMPED! that means you have to really work with him! Suppose you win, then you have to locate the few, hard to find AVB providers that qualify for board reimbursement. It is the board's responsibility to give you these providers, it you wait for them your child will turn 30 before they do it. Lets say you get lucky and find someone that is a good AVB provider, does not meet the board's requirements, you pay for that person. Guess what? another hearing to request reimbursement for this. All cases are different as you are dealing with different people and different districts. I hope this gives you some idea. I don't know other states. I know that in NY there are more children that need services than good attorneys, ABV's, informed pediat, etc..what you can get depends on many factors, the most important of which is the type of person that you are. I hope this helped you, not confuse or discourage you. I like to say it like I see it. PLease feel free to ask me any other questions. Best of luck!! G Copies to: <thetorres3@...>, " L. NC is good if you like TEACCH, because if you want a good TEACCH program, it will be offered to you without much fight at all. It was developed in NC after all. Guest guest
Wisconsin, Wisconsin, Wisconsin. I don't live there myself but know a number of people who were ABA consultants for autistic children there. Guest guest
Hi Suzanne: I live in NY - on Long Island. I would be happy to discuss the services my son is receiving. Guest guest
I actually found a lawfirm that does probono cases, which is great! I wouldn't be able to have an attorney if I had to pay. It is very sad all of the heartache and aggravation that we must endure as parents of children with disabilites, as if we don't have enough on our plate!! It's not fair that you have to fight for your child to get the best services possible. The services should be given, immediately, case closed!! Thank you for the encouragment, I am definitley out to get them!!LOL Take care, Vicki Lowery
Guest guest
If you're looking for a new job, I read at Wired.com that Microsoft now includes services for autistic children in its benefits package. I think that may be a first. Guest guest
Hi Sandy, they were referred to me from a parent advocate I was speaking to. He felt I would be better off with a lawyer handling my hearing, since my son's case, is a little complex. The name of the lawfirm is New York Lawyers for the Public Interest. 212-244-4664. Good Luck, Vicki Lowery
Guest guest
One of my friends works at Microsoft so I had him research it. Yes, Microsoft now includes services for Autistic children including coverage for ABA, even though that would be educational rather than medical. I had a hard time believing that so I got the name of the person who administrates Microsoft's medical insurance and assures me, Microsoft covers it and that while 2 years ago, they only covered it to 7 years of age, last year they changed it to 18yrs of age.
