Guest guest
Has anyone had success in teaching kids to object-refuse-mand appropriately not just when presented with a non-preferred, but also when given redirection, etc. This young man I am working with (age 10) has a tendency to really lose it when told no or if he's corrected. HE also has trouble asking people to stop nicely--he goes straight to a yell/scream. We have tried modeling and not stopping until we get the desired response, but we are not seeing much improvement. We are also looking at relaxation, calming techniques that may work for him. He is a pretty high functioning kiddo, very smart, and real verbal. Another huge weakness for him is theory of mind. For instance in a conversation program (statement-statement), when the therapist says I like yellow, he'll say NOOOOOO, blue. We've shaped this response up quite a bit, but I still don't think he " gets " that we aren't trying to trick him with his favorite color, we are truly expressing our own!!! I am not sure this is related to his inability to respond in a socially acceptable manner to unwanted requests, redirection, and non-preferred activities--but I think chances are pretty good. We really want to get this behavior under control and would appreciate any ideas. Thanks,
