Guest guest
List, While working at the table with my son, we are having a hard time getting him to keep his non-dominate hand quiet, while he is working with his dominate hand. For example, if he is putting a puzzle piece in with his left hand, his right hand is constantly flapping up near his face. I put his right hand down while he works, but frequently he struggles to lift it back up again, and I feel like he is not learning anything in that moment, just upset that he can't lift up and stim with that hand. My thought is to make keeping the " right hand quiet " as a goal of it's own. What I had tried the last couple of days was to tell him (whether he understands, I don't know) that he must keep his hand quiet until the timer goes off (very short timings...1-3 seconds) and he can get the reinforcer he chooses. The first couple of times he lifted it up right away, but he seemed to get the idea after a few timings. Does this seem like a good plan? Or does anyone have any other thoughts? I was hoping with my timings the idea of keeping that right hand quiet while working with left would be paired with something good (rather than a struggle and test of wills it has become). Any thoughts are appreciated! Eileen in Florida
