Guest guest
Hello list, I will try to keep this short. I am looking for advice and experienced parents, students or consultants in Applied Verbal Behavior. I learned of this list and AVB just last week at a conference in Lakeland, FL. Jenn Godwin gave a wonderful presentation and the video clips had my husband and I very interested in getting help for our 3 year old daughter. Unfortunately, we had to run out the door in order to make it to a wedding and did not have a chance to meet and ask questions. Our daughter is 3.2 and has a variety of suspected diagnosis (ranging from developmental delays, verbal apraxia, hypotonia, sensory integration disorder and dysarthria.) We now just describe her as " somewhere just over the rainbow of autism spectrum disorders. " Since she does not fit neatly into any label, it is just easier to explain our current concerns. She began speaking at about 2.6 years after 8 months of typical speech and oral motor therapy. However, she now shows difficulty in language and pragmatics. She cannot answer WH questions and is only beginning to say " yes " and " no " but usually requires prompts. She has a wonderful memory and does well with flash cards and labeling pictures and items. From what I learned at the seminar I would say that she does have a large receptive repertoire, many tacts and very few mands with almost no intraverbals. (Yes, I did study my handout. lol) Her eye contact and attention are good and she loves to learn although she needs to learn HOW to learn. Some tasks must be broken down for her although others (like letters, numbers, colors, logos) require very little exposure or teaching. Her frustration level can be high and a " perfectionist " streak runs pretty strong. All in all, we believe she would respond very well to this form of therapy and would appreciate any advice or direction you can provide. I've started doing a few little things I saw in the clips at the seminar using the flashcards and books we already have. I've increased the pace and prompts from what we had been doing and she LOVES it. I'm not sure if this is typical but not much about our journey has been typical so far. Thanks for you time and I look forward to any advice! Jen (Mia's Mother) Lakeland, FL
Guest guest
Hi, Jen. There's a listing of people with experience in VB on my website's HelpLine (www.BurkABA.com) that may be helpful to you. There's also a link under " Getting Started " to ABA's behavior analyst job service, which has listings of folks looking for students. Hope this helps, ________________________________________ Burk, M.A. Consulting Behavior Analyst (AVB specialization) Burk Behavioral Consulting www.BurkABA.com BurkABA@...
