Guest guest
A good Asperger website is http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/ Treatment recommended by researchers such as Tony Attwood and Lord as well as the book Social Stories by Carol Gray are behavioral based. The treatment is used to develop appropriate social skills including conversational skills. Your school does not understand that behavioral methods are excellent in teaching appropriate behaviors and skills. > Date: Mon, 09 Sep 2002 07:42:51 -0000 > From: " leralida " <leralida@...> >Subject: Newly diagnosed High Functioning Autism > >My 4 yr 2 mo old daughter was recently diagnosed and I am now >discussing therapy options with her special education teacher. > >Her IEP meeting is this Friday. Guest guest
Hi, I have the same problem except my child is somewhat high functioning. By age 6, I think the school district thinks anything goes because they put the kid on a developmental scale of curriculum instead of comparing my child to his age group and designing curriculum to help him be age appropriate. They essentially said he has no behavior problems (even though they listed 2 " big " issues in his typical class) and I had to literally pound my fist and yell at them " What do you think autism is? Isn't it a behavior disorder? " " No, " they replied, " it is a communication disorder " . I gave up but still got my way. They checked the " Needs behavior plan " box. I feel this keeps them from kicking him out of school easier if they get tired of teaching him (I've seen their teaching and I would have behavior problems, too). Her IEP meeting is this Friday. My daughter is verbal, but has very poor conversational skills. She also does not interact with peers and has immature play skills. Testing so far shows poor pragmatics, high IQ and poor social skills. Informally the school agrees to speech therapy at her private preschool (small group of NT peers), but they appear resistant to behavioral intervention. They feel she does not have " any behavioral problems at school " . Where can I find information to support the need for behavioral tx for a verbal child with primarily poor pragmatics and social skills? I also like to begin attending conferences. Any recommendations on speakers, etc. that discuss therapy for high functioning autism? Thanks,
Guest guest
, If your daughter shows poor social skills and play skills, if these areas were measured with an assessment providing standard scores, percentiles, etc.(norm referenced tests), and if they measured appropriately large delays, then she should qualify for services to address these areas of delay just as she would for speech, ot, pt, counseling, etc. If these areas were not formally assessed using an appropriate instrument, ask that these areas be assessed in greater depth. Hope this helps.
