At a support group for parents of children with

autism, one of the parents mentioned recently that a

sex offender had actually been advertising his

services as an ABA therapist. He did have the

background and experience, but he was a molestor.

This person went on to molest children under his care.

Apparently, the man is now in prison.

It's so crucial for parents to be careful who we let

into our homes. Check these people out before opening

your doors to anyone. Doing this is so obvious, but I

think that most parents are so overwhelmed with the

desire to see their children improve through therapy,

that they will let anyone into their homes whom they

think can help their child. If we don't open our

doors to people knocking unsolicited, then we need to

be even more careful whom we allow to work with our

children.

Get several references, bearing in mind that

references can be phoney. Hopefully, we can talk to

other parents we know who have actually had the

prospective therapist work with their child to see

what they have to say about the person.
