Guest guest
Okay, so we have a consultant through the school district, and he's told me a couple of programs to do with my daughter until the next time we meet. I'm concerned that we could/should be doing more. The developmental pediatrician we saw prescribed at least 5 hours/week of ABA (though I think she modified the wording to " behaviorist " so as not to freak out the school district). We had a very good one, but the SD didn't fund the behaviorist, and we can't afford to shell out (hourly rate is quite high). We're on L.I. in NY (Nassau County). There's a program near us (Genesis School), and I met some therapists. They are not BCBA, but have been working in the field for nine years. My daughter is five, has Asperger's, and is starting to be mainstreamed. When I spoke to the chattier of the therapists, she was doing a lot of talking re charts and reinforcers and so on. Does this sound like straight tabletop work to you? Does anyone know about the Genesis School? Is it straight Lovaas? Because from what I've been reading, AVB sounds more like the way to go for my daughter--if one of her issues is generalizing and redundancy, it makes way more sense to me for her to know multiple ways of expressing the same thought. I'd really welcome any thoughts. I apologize, by the way, for the fact that I rarely post except to ask really stupid newbie questions, but I'm really not sure where to go, except to other experienced parents. The consultant keeps stressing that social skills are more important than academic, which I'm sure is true, but since cognitive is a relative strengths, to me it makes sense to help her wtih abstraction. Might as well capitalize on what she *does* do well.
