Subject: Verbal Auditory Agnosia (VAA) This diagnostic or descriptive term was mentioned in the newsletter of the Madison, WI. chapter of the ASA. The newsletter cites the Spring 2001 publication, Naarative. Is any one aware of this possible subset of the autism spectrum disorders? , The first Developmental Pediatrician who evaluated my Evy felt he might have verbal auditory agnosia. He didn't seem to recognize that a human voice was anymore significant than the hum of a dishwasher. Of course, with proper education, he is now completely expressive with a few lingering pragmatic deficits. In hindsight, I feel that the agnosia was a reflection of his attention or sensory impairment. He didn't understand which auditory cues in his environment were relevant. He used to attend to faraway auditory stimuli--TV's in another room, etc, rather than me talking right in front of his face. He had the same difficulty with selecting appropriate visual input (Attending to background of videos, rather than the characters in the foreground). ABA and particularly, VB have corrected that. t
