Guest guest
I thought I'd write in a share with y'all a success story in Math, in case others are dealing with the same issue. A child I work with was having difficulty with word problems in math at school. His classroom uses SRA's Connecting Math Concepts. The task is to write the equation when read the problem. EX: Teacher reads this 2 times. Susy had 8 apples. She ate 6. How many does Susy have now? Child writes: 8-6=2 We identified his error as not translating the verb used to say whether to plus or minus. Here's what we did to remediate. The teacher and I made a list of all the verbs Connecting Math Concepts uses to say Plus or Minus. I then taught the verbs to the child using intraverbal fill-ins. EX: Buys means.....plus Gave away means....minus Got more means....plus ate means....minus I taught these at home only and his teacher used the fill-in as a prompt during math. Then faded the fill-in and he can now write the equations when read. Hope this helps others! Shauna Hazlitt, M.Ed.
