What you don’t know, what you need to know about these important programs aimed at increasing the number of live donors and assuring every live

kidney donor has life, health and disability insurance

Audioconference: Wednesday, July 9, 2008

1:00 – 3:00 Eastern Time 12:00 – 2:00 Central Time

11:00– 1:00 Mountain Time 10:00 – 12 Noon Pacific Time

Presented by Transplant Communications, Inc. publisher of

Transplant News and the International Transplant Directory

On June 20, the United Network for Organ Sharing/Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Board of Directors approved the elements of a pilot national system to facilitate kidney paired donation. The board stressed that the pilot system will be voluntary, open to any living kidney transplant program meeting OPTN requirements and for any candidate on the OPTN kidney waiting list. However, the action seems likely to be a prelude to what eventually will be a mandated National Kidney Paired Donation Program. The impact will be felt by transplant centers, organ procurement organizations (OPOs), and payers who will have to understand and develop this complex new program. Since 2000, approximately 250 paired donation transplants have been performed in the US, however some experts estimate an active national paired donation program could result in 3,000 additional kidney transplants alone.

The second topic to be addressed -- The Living Organ Donor Network Registry (LODN) and Donor Insurance policy will introduce you to an important new program that has a long term goal of providing every living donor with health, disability and life insurance. The LODN program, which is still in its early developmental stages, is patterned after the National Bone Marrow Registry. The Bone Marrow Registry reports its program provides routine coverage of all donors with disability and life insurance policies.

Because of the complexity of the issues and the quality of the panel assembled to address the issues, Transplant News has extended the audioconference by 30 minutes – it will now last for two hours beginning at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. There is no increase in the registration fee.
