It is an unfortunately easy mistake to

make – thinking that only big integrated systems like Kaiser, Geisinger,

et al can do this work very well. The big systems are gathering data and

have the resources to dedicate to research, publication, and

improvement. I don’t want to detract from the good work

these groups have done and are doing, but to make the point that solo and small

practices can do this as well and can do it very well indeed, and without a big

hierarchical organization can make decisions quickly and improve more quickly

(when it chooses to do so).

was at the DC meeting this week and we talked for a bit

after. She’s very interested in learning more about us, so I look

forward to further conversation.

Healthcare change

I was listening to Mehmet Oz on Oprah xm

radio today, I love that show. Today seriously disturbed me though. The guest

was a journalist named Brownlee who talked about her book Overtreated.

She made lots of great points regarding drug use and creation of illness

because we have something to treat it wit etc.. But the disturbing part was

that her conclusion is we have a problem with healthcare DELIVERY, not

reimbursement and the best way to handle healthcare reform is to pay big

companies like Kaiser, Mayo, Cleveland clinic enough to have all healthcare

delivered by giant systems like Kaiser now. YIKES!! I am concerned

people will listen to her! Here is a link to the website talking about

the guest today. http://www.oprah.com/article/oprahandfriends/moz/20081212_oaf_moz
