Guest guest
I couldn't find the original post, so I'll reply here. My son (without apraxia) had always had a terrible time with writing, both the physical and actually thinking of words. For the physical part, he's practiced a lot. I've heard that taking piano can also help, but we haven't tried this. Once was in third grade, we started typing lots of his work. At first, he would dictate the work to me, and I would type. After a few months, he started typing. He learned how to type using Mavis Beacon software at school, and he's good at it (5th grade next year). Thank goodness, starting in 4th grade the teachers really don't care what the handwriting looks like as long as they can read it. As for figuring out words to say, had a hard time in kindegarten through 2nd grade. In third, he switched schools and started a new writing curriculum. It's called Step Up To Writing. It's very methodical. First, it teaches a simple paragraph. It uses color strips to show the different parts of a paragraph. Yellow strip for introduction and conclusion sentences, green for details, and red for tell me more sentences. It really helped my son organize his paragraphs. For sentences, they taught him to write super sentences. They would write a simple sentence, and then they would add descriptions around the nouns. They called this surrounding the nouns. had a hard time in third grade catching up, but in 4th he breezed through the writing. Their system was very logical, and he needed that. My daughters started using Step Up To Writing in kindergarten. They learned how to write simple paragraphs: intro, 3 details, and a conclusion. In first grade they added tell me more sentences, and super sentences. Even (with apraxia) can write good paragraphs and sentences using this method. Here's the website for Step Up To Writing: www.stepuptowriting.com Hope this helps. Suzi > Jeff, > I have used HANDWRITING WITHOUT TEARS for my son with good success. However, wihtout the lines and help spelling and spacing he still falls apart when writing. Carol > >
Guest guest
Lori, I went to a school where I had teachers take the pencil out of my hand and make me hold it their way. That was 35 years ago. You would think things would have changed by now. I must say I am impressed that your son can write with his right hand. I couldn't write with my left if I tried. Guest guest
, Well he can but it isn't pretty. Pretty illegible actually. I thought the CMT was causing his poor handwriting and fatique but no that isn't the cause at all at this point anyway. I wonder if and when the CMT starts to effect his hands if it will be worse because he is already using the wrong hand. Lori
