I feel the same way........I selectively vaccinate as well........and I did do the DPT as well.....I know this is such a heated topic and irks me when people say if you don't vaccinate you a risking my child..........NO how about it's MY child at risk.......if yours is vaccinated then you should be able to rest easy.....if you are not then you need to re-evaluate your decision.

I am so sorry your son is sick, but I must say even if we did all run out and vaccinate our children.. as you can see its NOT 100% effective.

On the other hand. I selectively vaccinate. DPT is one of the few we do do.

Some of this other stuff though.. like Chicken pox, ear infections, etc.. I refuse.

Re: [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] OT: Pertussis

See I never understood that logic.....how is a child how has NOT been vaccinated dangerous to a child who has been. The whole point of putting the toxins into to your child is to prevent them from getting the illness. I think its all a crock...........if my baby caught something that he has been vaccinated against I would really be irate! Maybe if this country took more caution against allowing these disease into the country to begin with we would not have to worry about it as much. But then our medical industry wouldn't be as rich as they are would they................

There is abooster available, for those that were previously vaccinated, thatshould be given when a child reaches 10-12. The hospital stronglyrecommends that each child receive this booster at the age of 10,especially now, since they are seeing more and more childhood diseasesthat they thought were once eradicated. My son has been miserable. He's had only an extremely low grade fever, coughing/loss of breathepisodes and vomiting. He was misdiagnosed several times before theyfound the true culprit. For very young children, this disease can befatal. My child with DS is being placed on an antibioticprophalatically, for HIM, this illness can be pretty dangerous, due tohis already lowered resistance to respiratory diseases. SO, please.........I know it is the rights of the parents to refusevaccinations, but in the broad picture, it is really quite dangerous, not just for your own child but for others in the community that HAVEbeen vaccinated and are still being exposed. Yes but it is the fact that we don't know how are bodies are going to react that has some of us concerned. If has DS who is to say that he would not be "predisposed" to autism given the MMR shot..... now that they are admitting there is a pre-disposition...........but they don't know or care what it is.........won't take the time or money to research it........too many DS kids with dual diagnosis.......I am too scared to wake up one day and have my baby as I know him gone.

No vaccine gives everyone 100% immunity. It's not the vaccines' 'fault' it's just how our bodies are. People who have contracted things are not always 100% safe forever either. The more who are vaccinated, the less disease there will be out and about. That's a proven fact. :-) And those who don't .or can't vaccinate ( such as in her early years) really do depend on the majority for their protection.

Carol,

How did you get her in school with out the MMR? That is the one that scares me the most! What state are you in?

Dawn

Mom to angel 2

I totally agree Caroline, I was very happy that I could not be forced into vaccinating her before I felt she was ready. She even went to school with out her MMR. It's a great country we live in that allows us the freedom to over see our family's health care.Yet another reason to avoid govt run health care. That would take away any of those choices.

You know, everyone has to evaluate their own situation all & we all need to respect each other's choices. This can be a very controversial topic. In my family I have a niece who has very serious seizure disorder from her DPT shot. She was a typically developing child until then, but alas she will never be the same and regresses each year, unfortunately. When Isabella also got a serious seizure disorder as a 7 month old we stopped vaccinating her. Fortunately for Isabella she is now seizure free. Honestly, since you never know how your child will react you need to do your research and make the decision which is best for you and your children.Caroline>

That is going to be my plan...........did they give you a hard time? Did you have to write something? I am going to ask the doc on Friday to consider a medical waiver based on no way to guarantee he would not be subject to the "genetic defect" that cause it........if she says know then I will ask for a religious objection as my faith is in the lord to protect and heal not the doctors..........HE has looked after my angel thus far.

Dawn

Religious objection.God has given her family the responsibility to make these decisions not the state....That's all it took.

Nope, not at all!! And I did have to write something and at the time have it signed by our Pastor.Much easier then getting a med waiver I would think......She did get her MMR, needs a booster, which I will be getting soon. But I did it on MY time, not theirs. And if you have to go the ER make sure you state with a confident attitude that you are not up to date. Any little perceived waiver in your resolve. and they will be ALL over you.

It is such a hard decision.........I want to do what is right for my baby and protect him as best I can.....it is not an easy decision to make..........I just wish there was a test to show who is and who is not "pre-disposed" to the ill effects. I just spoke with a woman who works in a day care center and she said there were just two kids recently vaccinated and they are "different" now and they are being evaluated for autism.....right after the shots they changed. So sad.........so hard.

Dawn

This is true- no one knows how any body is going to react to either the vaccine or the disease it's self.I personally waited a long time, but has had all her shots with no ill effects and it has protected her.But if everyone who could get vaccinated, did. Then those who could not or for some reason had a family history or reason not to, could breathe a lot easier. We have had an increase due to immigrants coming in the country from places where they are not as blessed as we with regards to access to health care. That alone proves that vaccines do help keep diseases from becoming wide spread. We need to get those people taken care of and up to speed with our health care standards, but that' a WHOLE other controversial topic!!! :-)

Re: [DownSyndromeInfoEx change] OT: Pertussis

See I never understood that logic.....how is a child how has NOT been vaccinated dangerous to a child who has been. The whole point of putting the toxins into to your child is to prevent them from getting the illness. I think its all a crock....... ....if my baby caught something that he has been vaccinated against I would really be irate! Maybe if this country took more caution against allowing these disease into the country to begin with we would not have to worry about it as much. But then our medical industry wouldn't be as rich as they are would they........ ........

You know, everyone has to evaluate their own situation all & we all need

to respect each other's choices. This can be a very controversial topic.

In my family I have a niece who has very serious seizure disorder from

her DPT shot. She was a typically developing child until then, but alas

she will never be the same and regresses each year, unfortunately. When

Isabella also got a serious seizure disorder as a 7 month old we stopped

vaccinating her. Fortunately for Isabella she is now seizure free.

Honestly, since you never know how your child will react you need to do

your research and make the decision which is best for you and your children.

That is going to be my plan........ ...did they give you a hard time? Did you have to write something? I am going to ask the doc on Friday to consider a medical waiver based on no way to guarantee he would not be subject to the "genetic defect" that cause it........if she says know then I will ask for a religious objection as my faith is in the lord to protect and heal not the doctors..... .....HE has looked after my angel thus far.

My Chiropractor did not vax any of his kids. They are all in their 30s now.

He gave me the letter he used. And in his state that was enough. I used his as a base for mine ( different states) and filed the proper paper work.

That said.. They did give me a hard time. And I only objected to the Chicken pox for that particular child. She was " sickly" with

reactive airway disease. ( she got croup etc) I had a doc excuse for all her absences.. but they kept " losing " them.

When they send the truant officer after us.. well.. that was when we decided to home school. She was only 5 and compulsory was not till age 6. The principal told us to just withdraw her.

So.. If your doc won't .... see if a chiropractor in the area will help you.

Hi all!

Just wanted to send a cautionary tidbit your way:

My son, age 11, not DS, was just diagnosed with Pertussis (Whooping

Cough) - I was blown away, as I am aware that he was vaccinated

against it when he was younger. According to the hospital, they see

more and more cases of this stuff and they attribute it to families

refusing vaccinations due to Autism and other reasons. There is a

booster available, for those that were previously vaccinated, that

should be given when a child reaches 10-12. The hospital strongly

recommends that each child receive this booster at the age of 10,

especially now, since they are seeing more and more childhood diseases

that they thought were once eradicated. My son has been miserable.

He's had only an extremely low grade fever, coughing/loss of breath

episodes and vomiting. He was misdiagnosed several times before they

found the true culprit. For very young children, this disease can be

fatal. My child with DS is being placed on an antibiotic

prophalatically, for HIM, this illness can be pretty dangerous, due to

his already lowered resistance to respiratory diseases.

SO, please.........I know it is the rights of the parents to refuse

vaccinations, but in the broad picture, it is really quite dangerous,

not just for your own child but for others in the community that HAVE

been vaccinated and are still being exposed. There is a definite

domino effect that can be prevented.

Thanks for listening!

I don't know but when I first heard about this issue I talked to my

grandmother about it and she said if you ever saw your baby suffer

through these diseases you would not have a doubt about making sure

your child is vaccinated. My grandma will be 89 and saw a lot of

illness in her day. She held a baby as it passed away due to

pertussis.

That was enough for me to vaccinate all 7 of my children. I have a

doctor who has allowed me to vaccinate my children with Downs on a

slower schedule and I have been very grateful. My kids are now all

up to date on their vaccinations.

It can be very dangerous in babies..back when I was a Peds nurse

(many years ago;-) we had a baby who was too young for the vaccination who had

gotten pertussis. The coughing episodes were so severe that she had brain damage

due to a lack of oxygen.

My sister was a typical kid. She also got pertussis after having been vaccinated.

Otherwise she was never sick.

I don’t understand what the vaccine is good for then, if it is not preventing pertussis? Seems like if you were vaccinated, you should be home free.

Hi all!Just wanted to send a cautionary tidbit your way:My son, age 11, not DS, was just diagnosed with Pertussis (WhoopingCough) - I was blown away, as I am aware that he was vaccinatedagainst it when he was younger. According to the hospital, they seemore and more cases of this stuff and they attribute it to familiesrefusing vaccinations due to Autism and other reasons. There is a definitedomino effect that can be prevented. Thanks for listening!

Some docs do give parents a hard time about this, though…even

refuse to have the kids in their practice if the parents refuse to vaccinate.

Nope, not at

all!! And I did have to write something and at the time have it signed by our

Pastor.

Much easier then getting a med waiver I would think......

She did get her MMR, needs a booster, which I will be getting soon.

But I did it on MY time, not theirs.

And if you have to go the ER make sure you state with a confident attitude that

you are not up to date. Any little perceived waiver in your resolve. and

they will be ALL over you.
