Guest guest
My 7 year old has always been told that his brain works a bit different and he accepts this as normal for him. In fact he now tells people that his wiring short-circuits if he comes across something that gets him confused. I think the main thing is to make sure that it is always stressed that it is not something they are doing wrong. A friend's AS son thought that all his problems were his fault for sending the wrong messages to his brain!
Guest guest
Ric, I thought would be very upset when he heard that he had something with a name but it was a relief to him. I was afraid to tell him and the he came up to me and said " Mom, do I have autism, I mean a mild case " . Then I talked to him about what that means. He smiled. He does not really know how to express himself so when he smiles that is like the rest of us laughing out loud! I think getting a diagnosis would possibly upset him. Now you are involving a doctor, like he's sick. He is not sick, sometimes he is healthier than other kids that are mean or cruel. He is sweet and nice, just has a hard time socially and does not like change and cannot understand cliches. I could go on...
