I agree that Ibuprofen is definitely not recommended for extended

periods of time. But we all agree that it is the most common drug

prescribed for children to reduce fever and it has been used for

years. It is even available over the counter so it has been proven

to be effective and safe if given as directed.

What I am thinking is that if Valtrex can be used to supress virus

that cause brain and gut inflammation. If chelation can be used to

detoxify children that have weak immune systems. If immune system

modulators can be used to regulate our children's immune systems. I

think that we can take advantage of Ibuprofen anti-inflammatory

therapy for short periods of time to accelerate the gains and

recovery time. Ibuprofen therapy could be used in conjunction with

the other therapies I mentioned above and in theory the gains should

persist. That is how I can explain how my son didn't regress after

we stopped the Ibuprofen once his fever went down.

The way I am thinking of giving Ibuprofen to my son is the following.

1-2 weeks of Ibuprofen (strictly with food only) see what the gains

are. Then stop the Ibuprofen for 1-2 months, see if the gains don't

go away. Then start the Ibuprofen for another 1-2 weeks.

I will give him the Ibuprofen together with Valtrex and natural

immune system modulators.

Ibuprofen can be given together with Misoprostol to avoid stomach

ulcers.

Hi Rei,

Dr. Goldberg ran a bunch of lab tests (metabolic, viral, food

allergies, etc) He started my son on Valtrex and Diflucan.

The whole Ibuprofen idea is mine. When we went to see him I was

expecting him to shut me down when I told him about Ibuprofen, but

he didn't. He said it made sense that Ibuprofen can help reduce

brain inflammation, but he said it can cause side effects including

gastric issues or liver stress. So he said that is why he doesn't

recommend it. He also told me that he will not give any medication

to any child that could hurt them. We really liked that.

He also told me that he is working with a few pharmaceutical

companies to come out with drugs that could be more effective than

the ones currently available.

I highly recommend him. One thing though is that he really

disagrees with the DAN protocol.

Thanks,

Has anybody tried Ibuprofen to reduce brain inflammation?

Hi,My son had the flu and a bacterial infection one after the other back in February. We gave him Children's Motrin for 8 days in a row to keep the fever down. We noticed that during the time he was sick, he looked more alert, talking more, less echoleia and less spacey. We were shocked by it. He didn't take ABA during the time he was sick, approximately 2 weeks. When he resumed his ABA treatment, his therapists were amazed on how much sharper his was.My son had a SPECT scan two weeks prior getting sick at Dr. Uszler's office in California. The SPECT scan showed hypoperfusion in his temporal lobes. Dr. Uszler told us that it could be inflammation due to a viral infection and referred us to Dr. Goldberg. In the meantime I talked to my son's DAN doctor which happens to be an immunologist and told him our story. He told me many of his patients got better after being sick with viral or bacterial infections. So he told me it made sense that it could be because some parents use Motrin to reduce fever. We had our first appointment with Dr. Goldberg a few weeks ago and I mentioned my son's improvements after the Ibuprofen and he said it could be possible. He also said that it could be benefitial, but it could have damaging side effects and that is why he will not prescribe it to his patients.Ibuprofen works as an anti-inflammatory drug by inhibiting the generation of cytokines which is the substance that creates inflammation. Also, Ibuprofen can rapidly cross the blood brain barrier so it can work on the brain effectively. There is a lot of information in the internet about how Ibuprofen is now being used to prevent and treat Alzheimer's which is also caused by brain inflammation. I am wondering if anybody have ever tried to give a Ibuprofen to their children and have they noticed a difference? We are thinking to do a 1-2 week Ibuprofen therapy to see if there are huge gains as when we gave it to him the first time. Thanks, Dr. Goldberg's testimony on Capitol Hillhttp://www.nids.net/testimony.htmThis may be a holding approach thus far wherein balancing the many neurological immune regulating proteins known as cytokines and chemokines may in turn rebalance behavior itself. Thank you, to reply my question. Where is Dr. Goldberg;s office? We are in LA county. My son is 10. I've always referred to motrin as Jake's best friend. He is calmer, more communicative and in a much better mood on motrin. When he is aggitated and grabbing at his legs or head I give it to him. He's better in about 10 minutes.

So, if Ibuprofen cannot be a long term treatment, what is the long term treatment? Did Dr. Goldberg give any insight?

====>With Ibuprofen they worry about GI bleed and kidney damage with long term use. I think this is what they have started using Minocylcine and Zithromax for as both reduce inflammation.

I'm not aware of Dr. Goldberg's approach to inflammation, if he has one. Maybe someone familiar with his or a general rx approach to inflammation can answer.

I've always been curious about the theory behind using antibiotics to reduce inflammation as we had noticed several times, in the beginning, ours was a little better on antibiotics.

We also need to remember that Dr. Goldberg is not the only one that

is trying to find a cure for autism. He is a human being just like

the rest of us. He gets excited and frustrated about everything

that is being said or not nowadays about autism. I have heard

people writing that he is rude and closed minded. He has been

REALLY nice to my family and has listened to what we have to say.

Sure, he has probably taken more than 10 years and that he keeps

promising new medications. But, think about how much he can control

that situation. Finding new medications is not a one person effort,

it requires, companies, our government, more people like Dr.

Goldberg, Dr. Neubrander, Dr. Gupta, DAN doctors and parents like us

to work as one. All these doctors have a lot of common beliefs, but

there are a lot of conflict of interests between them.

I cannot just belief that the government, pharmaceutical companies,

universities are not listening to us when we are recovering our

children. They only say, " there is no known cause or cure for

autism. " What is going on there? They are no better than the few

doctors that are working hard to help our children.

That is why we need to be patient specially with the few ones that

are trying to help our children. Dr. Goldberg is not perfect, who

is? he might not be the nice guy based on what some people say. I

am not the nicest guy either, what person is nice every second of

their lives? That doesn't make us bad people. I don't agree with

everything he believes in, and that is ok... all it matters is that

the big majority of the things he says make a lot of sense.

What I said about him working with pharmaceutical companies is

actually a quote of what he told me when I talked to him 4 days ago.

Thanks,

Yes, he has been promising this for 10 years but unfortunately he wasn't getting the funding.  NIH refused to fund him so he's bee scratching for private funding.  He finally got it last year  so he's been working very hard to get things moving now.  And he is speaking with a pharmaceutical company right now that is very interested.  He can't do it without financial backing and support.  So keep that in mind.  Every doctor that wants to do research needs money.  NIDS doesn't have the cash flow that DAN has through organizations like SafeMinds, ARI, etc.  He prefers to try to work within the realm of traditional medicine and he's been out every week in meetings since he got funding trying to convince traditional medicine that autism is a disease state not a psychological disorder to get some support in his quest.Cheryl ----- Original Message -----From:   Hi Rei,Dr. Goldberg ran a bunch of lab tests (metabolic, viral, food allergies, etc) He started my son on Valtrex and Diflucan. The whole Ibuprofen idea is mine. Sounds great. We are in El Paso, TX, but we have rest of family and our second home in Los Angeles. Got it, his office is in the Valley, just a little bit north of Los Angeles. Does he take blue cross blue shield? I guess I can call his office and find out. Thanks a lot. And best luck to your son. Rei wrote: Hi Rei,Below is Dr. Goldberg's contact information. I don't know how many of you have worked with MDs on a regular basis but Goldberg is actually REALLY nice. Sure, if you raise some contradictory points, he may shoot you down--may say certain things are silly, but that's what I'm used to with MDs anyway...I've worked at the best hospitals in Boston, Pennsylvania, and New York--they all are like that. No offense to any MDs out there--I thought Goldberg was like most really smart doctors I have met in my life. And you know what, I love anyone that refuses to call my child autistic. He says they are sick and not autisitic and as he stated to me in our appt "we are going to do everything to get a sharp, happy, bright little boy back." Beth

====>I think I was wrong, I don't think that is what he was saying for 10 years, it was something else that made it seem like only his patients would benefit from whatever was found. I can't remember exactly the way it was worded.

Any medicines developed by drug companies will be available to all.

I'm not knocking his protocol, I don't have a lot of respect for him personally but, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, you might be better off to find a dan! who is also good at immunity issues. Seems to me if you go to someone who is all immune, or all dan! you are putting all your eggs in one basket. And although there are those children who are all immune or all metal, the vast, vast majority of kids are a combination of these.

And he is speaking with a pharmaceutical company right now that is very interested. He can't do it without financial backing and support. So keep that in mind. Every doctor that wants to do research needs money. ====>Not judging but read carefully what you wrote. He also told me that he is working with a few pharmaceutical companies to come out with drugs that could be more effective than the ones currently available.

====>No disrespect to his PROTOCOL, but rather disrespect for his person, he's been promising this for 10 YEARS.

I highly recommend him. One thing though is that he really disagrees with the DAN protocol. Thanks, > > >> > > We had our first appointment with Dr. Goldberg a few > weeks > > > ago and I mentioned my son's improvements after the > Ibuprofen and he > > > said it could be possible. He takes most insurance. First autism doc that I only had to pay $10 for and left feeling incredibly hopeful!

That's is very encouraging to hear from Beth's experience. I had tons of horrible experiences with our own peds or psych docs as well, as long as we raised any questions that were out of their understanding fields, they got "unfriendly" a little bit and will intend to shut us off. When I first raised my doubt on vaccines to our ped, he got mad at me. When we shared with our pyschiatric docs about possibility of giving my son MB12 shots or bio-med treatments, they almost threw me out of their offices.... ( When I looked back, it made me laugh, though). Well, all these progress and learnings in austism are like any human kinds progress, combined with tears and joys, debates and cosolidations... So, let's be open minded and appreciative to at least somebody out there who is striking to helping our ill children. We, as parents, our children and doctors are making a remarkable history about treating "autism". It is worthy. Just for the record, my lack of respect for Dr. Goldberg has little to do with how nice or not nice he is or isn't. I could care less about that, although there is some improvement needed as reported by others.

I know, , we were just on the topic and I know there are a lot out there that share your sentiments about Goldberg--I was just sharing my experience, not trying to outwardly disagree with you. I hope you understand that :) There are many out there that feel the way you do for many different reasons. I just didn't want that to dissuade other parents from going to see him, you know, the whole "attitude" some say he has. Thanks for your input--it's good to get both sides, you know! That's what's going to cure our children! If you don't mind, what don't you like about Dr. G??? Thanks, Beth

My first ped back in NJ (when I questioned the safety of the vaccination sched when Luke was 2 months old), looked at me and said, "there's nothing to discuss. The whole thing is ludicrous." When you have a Harvard Medical School grad tell you that, you feel belittled and stupid, and then you do what they say because you feel that you are so much less intelligent than they are. It's just like when the head of the FAAP said something like, "It's preposterous to think there is a link..." I know I'm not quoting them perfectly but I remember the word "preposterous" being used. They use that kind of verbiage so you feel dumb and don't question their authority or knowledge on the subject matter. I can't tell you how many times as an ICU nurse I've questioned orders and I've gotten similar responses--you stop questioning when they make you

feel stupid. Nine times out of ten I was right to question the orders! We all need to keep asking questions and looking for answers and every physician out there should be doing the same in order to save all of our children!! I don't know why I got into all that.....Beth

My son's life time long ped was graduated from Harvard Med and Tokyo University Med PhD, too... But, he still insisted giving my son 4 shots at one visit after I questioned about vaccine schedule, he has never smiled at us since then....( lol)Beth Sutton wrote: My first ped back in NJ (when I questioned the safety of the vaccination sched when Luke was 2 months old), looked at me and said, "there's nothing to discuss. We used to be patients of his years ago, he did the rounds out to Aussie and down under, at the end of the day, he would insist on a spect scan done and starts kids on anti virals and anti fungals, isn’t that what most DAN docs would do these days, seems to me his treatment plan is not that unusual, all I remember is he is not into blaming vaccines for any of the damage, which seems a bit strange – anyway our child did all of his protocol and had no improvements – in fact would say that he kind of got messed up on the SSRIs he was using at the time – and then a friend of mines child who did have viral issues did really well – he sure always seemed to have an answer for everything in spit of the testing not showing anything – thought he was more about chronic fatigue type model of ASD – my two cents worth – we found it is a small piece of the puzzle and a bit two narrow for some of the more complex cases – could never understand why he couldn’t work in with other doctors.

He no longer does spect scans immediately anymore.  We've been seeing him for 1.5 years and we have yet to consider getting a spect scan.  I've asked him about it before and he told me that he's seen so many of them and they all look exactly the same so he doesn't do them right off the bat anymore.  He now waits until he feels like he's missing something and can't pinpoint it.  He says he also does them when he thinks he's at the end of the protocol with a child. It doesn't work for every child, just like any other protocol.CherylWe used to be patients of his years ago, he did the rounds out to Aussie and down under, at the end of the day, he would insist on a spect scan done and starts kids on anti virals and anti fungals, isn’t that what most DAN docs would do these days, seems to me his treatment plan is not that unusual, all I remember is he is not into blaming vaccines for any of the damage, which seems a bit strange – anyway our child did all of his protocol and had no improvements – in fact would say that he kind of got messed up on the SSRIs he was using at the time – and then a friend of mines child who did have viral issues did really well – he sure always seemed to have an answer for everything in spit of the testing not showing anything – thought he was more about chronic fatigue type model of ASD – my two cents worth – we found it is a small piece of the puzzle and a bit two narrow for some of the more complex cases – could never understand why he couldn’t work in with other doctors. On 3/5/08 4:18 AM, "Beth Sutton" <live4luke> wrote: I know, , we were just on the topic and I know there are a lot out there that share your sentiments about Goldberg--I was just sharing my experience, not trying to outwardly disagree with you. No, actually you've got it mostly right.  He has been promising a drug for a long time.  He's been trying to get an immune modulator going for a very long time.  The best thing we had was kutapressin and it's no longer available.  But he was hoping for better even when kutapressin was around. You're not alone in your feelings for Dr. G.  He's definitely not the most popular doc.Cheryl  Re: Re: Has anybody tried Ibuprofen to reduce brain inflammation?Yes, he has been promising this for 10 years but unfortunately he wasn't getting the funding.  NIH refused to fund him so he's bee scratching for private funding.  He finally got it last year  so he's been working very hard to get things moving now.====>I think I was wrong, I don't think that is what he was saying for 10 years, it was something else that made it seem like only his patients would benefit from whatever was found. I can't remember exactly the way it was worded.Any medicines developed by drug companies will be available to all.I'm not knocking his protocol, I don't have a lot of respect for him personally but, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, you might be better off to find a dan! who is also good at immunity issues.Seems to me if you go to someone who is all immune, or all dan! you are putting all your eggs in one basket. And although there are those children who are all immune or all metal, the vast, vast majority of kids are a combination of these.   And he is speaking with a pharmaceutical company right now that is very interested.  He can't do it without financial backing and support.  So keep that in mind.  Every doctor that wants to do research needs money. When we went to see him I was expecting him to shut me down when I told him about Ibuprofen, but he didn't. We've had a great experience with him but I certainly had a lot of people telling me not to see him when I was researching him.No, he doesn't think vaccines are the cause of autism but he does use a different vaccine schedule.  There are a few shots he doesn't even do.  But he does respect your decision not to vaccinate if you choose not to do so.  Just don't get into a conversation about vaccines and autism with him!  :)cherylWe used to be patients of his years ago, he did the rounds out to Aussie and down under, at the end of the day, he would insist on a spect scan done and starts kids on anti virals and anti fungals, isn’t that what most DAN docs would do these days, seems to me his treatment plan is not that unusual, all I remember is he is not into blaming vaccines for any of the damage, which seems a bit strange – anyway our child did all of his protocol and had no improvements – in fact would say that he kind of got messed up on the SSRIs he was using at the time – and then a friend of mines child who did have viral issues did really well – he sure always seemed to have an answer for everything in spit of the testing not showing anything – thought he was more about chronic fatigue type model of ASD – my two cents worth – we found it is a small piece of the puzzle and a bit two narrow for some of the more complex cases – could never understand why he couldn’t work in with other doctors. On 3/5/08 4:18 AM, "Beth Sutton" <live4luke> wrote: I know, , we were just on the topic and I know there are a lot out there that share your sentiments about Goldberg--I was just sharing my experience, not trying to outwardly disagree with you. G???  Thanks, Beth --- On Fri, 5/2/08,  <Ladyshrink111peoplepc> wrote:From: <Ladyshrink111peoplepc>Subject: Re: Re: Has anybody tried Ibuprofen to reduce brain inflammation? To: mb12 valtrex Date: Friday, May 2, 2008, 4:03 PMJust for the record, my lack of respect for Dr. Goldberg has little to do with how nice or not nice he is or isn't.  I could care less about that, although there is some improvement needed as reported by others. Re: Re: Has anybody tried Ibuprofen to reduce brain inflammation? That's is very encouraging to hear from Beth's experience.   I had tons of horrible experiences with our own peds or psych docs as well, as long as we raised any questions that were out of their understanding fields, they got "unfriendly" a little bit and will intend to shut us off. When I first raised my doubt on vaccines to our ped, he got mad at me. When we shared with our pyschiatric docs about possibility of giving my son MB12 shots or bio-med treatments, they almost threw me out of their offices.... ( When I looked back, it made me laugh, though). Well, all these progress and learnings in austism are like any human kinds progress, combined with tears and joys, debates and cosolidations. .. So, let's be open minded and appreciative to at least somebody out there who is striking to helping our ill children. We, as parents, our children and doctors are making a remarkable history about treating "autism". It is worthy. ReiBeth Sutton <live4lukeyahoo (DOT) com> wrote:I don't know how many of you have worked with MDs on a regular basis but Goldberg is actually REALLY nice. He says they are sick and not autisitic and as he stated to me in our appt "we are going to do everything to get a sharp, happy, bright little boy back."  BethBe a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Dear Group,

I have just learned with confirming labs that my autistic 8 yr old

has PANDAS, a clear version of brain inflammation per our doc and per

the significant findings on Neuroimmunology Labs cytokine markers.

Could someone please tell me where to go for info on latest in PANDAS

treatment in autistic kids. Thank you very much.
