Guest guest
Hi, I'm fairly new to this board, so please forgive me for being ignorant:) I REALLY want to try valtrex with my ds. He is 2.5 and has a diagnoses of severe/moderate asd. We've been seeing a DAN for a while, who has ds in VLS3 probiotic (switched from pro-bio gold and threelac) digestive enzymes, super nu thera, CLO, MB12 shots, folinic acid, and something called x-factor gold for other vitamins. I have a long history with cold sores, especially during my pg with ds. I've been considering valtrex for a while, but when I asked our DAN about it she kind of shrugged it off. I don't know if that means she isn't interested in trying it, or if she wants to address ds's gut issues before trying valtrex. There were so many things to talk about when we were there the valtrex subject just didn't get much attention I guess. Anyway, the reason for this post is that my ds seems to have his first cold sore and a bit of a rash on his face, which is really making me want to try valtrex on him even more. But, after searching around and reading as much as I can, I keep seeing that valtrex isn't approved for treatment in children, which worries me. I've emailed our DAN several times to get her thoughts on it, and various other issues, but unfortunately she's not very good about getting back to me. So, I've been thinking about just asking our normal pedi for a trial period on valtrex, but know she is very conservative and probably won't be willing to try an unapproved drug not to mention making sure he gets proper antifungal support. For those of you using valtrex, have any of your doctors explained why it's not approved for children and what the dangers might be? Did your DAN prescribe it or a regular pedi? Is there information somewhere that I can provide to our regular pedi on how it helps asd kids and the medical aspects of why/how it is safe to at least try? Has anyone seen significant improvements with valtrex in their asd kids?
Guest guest
It's never been studied on children which is why it isn't approved for children. But do understand that mainstream docs do Rx it for children, too. It's usually just when it's obvious they need it unlike in our case where it's not so obvious.
