Re: organic milk and antibiotics

, you didn't read THE UNTOLD STORY OF MILK did you? Go do it now.

The insane arguments of these members of the " antibiotic pushers professions'

(my own

lovely profession!) like your probably well-intentioned (vegan?), but

brain-washed-by-

industry cousin stretches the imagination into some sort of bizarre and dark

comedy. If

millions of animals weren't suffering this minute, from the vet profession

itself, and, even

more so from the commercial dairy industry, I would be laughing hysterically.

You can pierce the idiotic argument put forth by these pill pusher reps by

getting a

pen and paper and have them give you the organic dairy farms THEY HAVE VISITED

AND

INSPECTED! Trust me, there won't be any. Like any other disease, in this case

mastitis, the real solution is to change management, nutrition, and genetics so

there isn't

any! Prevention is worth 1000 cures. It's not even really a question about

therapeutic antibiotic use anyway, sick animals in an organic herd CAN HAVE

ANTIBIOTICS

(if it's too late for natural cures)! We don't let them suffer! We just don't

sell that meat or

milk as antibiotic-free! The milk can be used for other purposes and the animal

can, in

most cases, go back on line making safe and wholesome milk, as the antibiotics

are only

shed for a certain number of days. Every natural, sustainable and

holistically-managed

dairy has virtually NO mastitis!

Furthermore, I cannot defend " organic milk " or for that matter, anything labeled

" organic " just because it's USDA certified (now you must read THE OMNIVORE'S

DILEMMA

on the topic of Big Organic!). Greed and deception have enabled our country to

grow up

a fleet of Big Organic commercial dairies (5000 cows, 10,000 cows to a farm!) so

this has

now become cruel, dangerous and toxic. Can you see the smoke coming out of my

ears

as I write?

Therefore, it is NOT EASY to make the right choices as we try to our best when

we " vote with our fork " . This is the best argument we have for BUYING LOCAL,

KNOWING

YOUR FARMER, and KNOWING YOUR FARM SOURCE. This is the exact point we are trying

to

make with our buying club warehouse and the local foods we make available there

to people who cannot otherwise know the truth.

Hi ,

I agree with Will, and want to point out that he was NOT yelling at

YOU although it kinda sounded like it.

Basically, think of it like this, one of the biggest reasons for

mastitis (according to one of the cow raising books I read) is sudden

engorgement and or producing far more milk than a cow should (as is

the case with holsteins).

When YOU had mastitis, I am willing to bet that you weren't given

antibiotic, but rather told to nurse it out, that is because

antibiotics CANNOT fix the cause of mastitis.

When cows are fed grain, it is usually in order to make them gain

weight quickly, or to get them to produce more milk than they would

otherwise. Grain, because it is NOT what a cow is designed to eat,

can seriously contribute to causing mastitis, and therefore, cows who

are raised organically, provided that they are PASTURE raised with

little to no grain just won't get mastitis, and if they do, they are

given other cures first that usually work WITHOUT damaging their

intestinal flora.

Have you ever heard of probiotics? Well a cows digestive system

relies on probiotics (among other things such as specialized enzymes)

in order to ferment the grass they eat (which is why cows fart so

much), if they are given antibiotics, their probiotics are wiped out,

and they can't digest.

The question is not whether the cow is organically raised, but are

they PASTURE raised.

And please do read The Untold Story of Milk by Ron Schmid, this book

will answer all of questions about milk, and REALLY help you to

understand why good quality pasture raised milk is worth it's weight

in gold.

Good luck,

Roxanne

Did think Will was yelling? I missed that post. Will always sounds

like he is yelling, but in person he is very sweet, and then you realize he

probably has never yelled at anyone in his life. :-)
