On a hunch, I checked to see if there were volcanoes in Nevada, since there are some in California close by. Here is what I found.

Steamboat Springs is an area with volcanic domes and hot springs which isn't far from Reno. You can also see on the map the number of other volcanic features in the area north and south of Reno. Perhaps it is related to those old sites. The article did say that they don't think it was volcanic because it is shallow, but with that many features in the area, perhaps this is a very old site that had not been noticed before and is waking up again.

PS: I was of course joking about the aliens.

Here is what I think...Remember that while this is going on, there is trouble off the coast of Oregon also. We know that the oceanic plate is subducting under the continental one, but people do not stop and think that point at which the plate actually melts into the earth is somewhere under the east side of the rockies. I think maybe both plates are somehow readjusting themselves, and I also think this may have been why we saw the earthquake in Illinois a little while ago.AdministratorNeed a new ride? There is a significant number of precursor events to volcanic activity.

Bulges and other activities. So there would be a LOT of noticeable activities of all sorts in both Reno & Illinois if there was volcanic activity occurring that would lead to an eruption in the next 10 years. 20 to 100 years is possible but will have events leading up to it. Which then gets ignored (like at Mount St. Helens) and then everyone is "surprised".

Now the Oregon ones are more uncertain as it's underwater and cannot be so easily monitored for ground movement in terms of changes in surface height and shape.

They were noting a while back about land height changes in the Mammoth Lake region. Nothing happening there yet.
