Where to go to get ABA?

Hello,

Despite living near a large city (Indianapolis), I have found that

the number of people that truly understand autism and how to treat

it to be severely lacking. My wife and I run a home ABA program for

our 3 year old daughter with the help of a BCBA consultant.

Unfortunately, experienced therapists are nearly impossible to come

by, despite the fact that our daughter is on a Medicaid waiver and

our insurance company has agreed to pay for ABA therapy. We have

trained a few therapists that we recruited from local universities,

but these persons cannot take the place of someone that has a deep

understanding of autism. We recently learned that our BCBA

consultant is moving to Michigan. The demand here seems to be much

greater than the supply. The public schools here know all the right

buzz words, but under close examination it is discovered that they

are equipped to provide neither the individualized nor intensive

intervention required for children with autism. The private autism

schools are full. I am quickly arriving at the conclusion that

Indiana has nothing to offer our daughter and am considering our

options. One option is moving to another state.

My question is this: is the situation the same in other states?

Is everyone struggling to find quality help? Are there any locations

that seem to have a surplus of knowledgeable people? If so, please

let me know.

Thanks for any info.

First, ask your current consultant, local psychology professors, any FEAT chapter in your area(Families for Effective Autism Treatment)or go to the national FEAT website and check for info. Also, you could call Cols. Children's Autism Clinic (Ohio)and ask them if they know an ABA professional in your area...good luck! Sally
