Every year I want to do the Buddy Walk that is local to my area. Mostly to meet other parents in my area. But I can't afford to attend it. It cost's $25 per person just to go which would equal over $100 for my family. Do they charge to attend all of the Buddy Walks or is this just Orange County? Guest guest
We have never charged anyone just to attend - we do ask for a minimum $25 donation to get a t-shirt although a few years ago we added that all individuals w/ Ds get a t-shirt regardless (after all we felt it was their day).Fort Wayne INI was just wondering. Guest guest
Every 'walk' around the country has a fee....because it is a fundraiser....Cancer Walks and 5K runs, The G Komen 3 day walks are pretty expensive...fundraisers all of them! Not just Down syndrome Associations. Do you donate money to any charity? The $25 donation is a tax deductible You can also do a 'fundraiser' with the Buddy Walk online to raise money through emailing your friends. How old is your child? There are a bunch of activities that go on at the DSAOC office that are great opportunities to meet other parents too. I completely understand the money is tight this year, we simply are not giving to other charities we usually support and putting all of our money into Down Syndrome related charities because I believe that's where our money will best serve 's needs. , Mom to 14, DS, Southern CaliforniaTo succeed in life, you need three things:a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone.~ Reba McIntyre Diagnosis Down Syndrome: A Site of Hope for New Parents or Parents with a Prenatal Diagnosishttp://www.leeworks.net/DDS/What to Say to Parents of a Child with a Diagnosishttp://www.leeworks.net/DDS/speech.html [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] Buddy Walk I was just wondering. Guest guest
Our Buddy Walk in Orange County is quite the day....they rent Angel Stadium, and to get to walk on the 'hallowed' fields and run the bases is one thing that gets our 'friends' to come out with us! Then there are a bunch of activities for the kids, those big blow up bounce houses and obsticle courses...lunch is provided, a DJ who happens to have Down syndrome is there for a dance area and that's always a popular hang out for the teens and young adults. IT's the major fundraiser for the year for DSAOC, and they also are required to send a portion of the money to NDSS too. I think their goal this year is $300,000 but I could be wrong. , Mom to 14, DS, Southern CaliforniaTo succeed in life, you need three things:a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone.~ Reba McIntyre Diagnosis Down Syndrome: A Site of Hope for New Parents or Parents with a Prenatal Diagnosishttp://www.leeworks.net/DDS/What to Say to Parents of a Child with a Diagnosishttp://www.leeworks.net/DDS/speech.html RE: [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] Buddy Walk We have never charged anyone just to attend - we do ask for a minimum $25 donation to get a t-shirt although a few years ago we added that all individuals w/ Ds get a t-shirt regardless (after all we felt it was their day). Guest guest
We don’t charge to attend ours (south bend, IN) We give people a free t-shirt if they bring $50 in donations, but anyone who attends gets to listen to the bands, the kids can play games, and everyone gets lunch. We provide tables for area care/therapeutic program providers (respite, therapeutic horseback riding, orthotics, camps…etc…we don’t charge them, either.) Guest guest
The fee that they have at our Buddy walk is for the shirt and food. Since has a feeding disorder, we never pay for him, just hubby and I to eat and have a shirt.Janet HTucson, AZ

Guest guest
Ours does not have a fee at all. However.. the first time we went we just showed up. Its on public property after all : ) We just wanted to mix and mingle and jump in. was only 14 days old or so. So.. I think if you pay for only those getting a shirt.. and such then go for it. You could pack PB & J's or what not for your children.. and you, your husband, and your oldest or so.. pay and get shirts/food. Knocks it down to $30 or 40 $100 is a lot to ask of a family. IMO. Guest guest
DSAGC Does not have a fee to register. But the DSAGC brings in TONS of money. One if the bigger ones in the nation. Last year we got White Castles and A chili parlor to donate free burgers and coneys. [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] Buddy Walk I was just wondering. Guest guest
we don't bring in a huge amount of money, but we do get all of the food donated, and we don't have to pay for a place to hold it, so we kind of regard the Walk as a fundraiser/communityawareness/ " family " reunion....we ask people to bring donations and give prizes (donated) for the highest donors/highest team donors, etc (prizes like a night at an area hotel, free bowling, free pizza for 10 people,,etc. We sell our calendars, bracelets,,extra t-shirts. We have kids from the area colleges/high schools come to volunteer to play with the kids w/Ds and their brothers and sisters. We usually have about 500 people attend...not huge, but it is a lot of fun. KathyR --------- [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] Buddy Walk I was just wondering. Guest guest
Our Buddy Walk is totally free. Everything is donated including food, beverages, entertainment, activities for the kids, etc. You only pay if you want to buy something like a t-shirt, calendar, hat, etc., or if you want to make a donation. It is a great way for families to get together. Our Buddy Walk is mostly for awareness rather than fundraising, so our focus is on getting media attention. We have a golf tourney and proclamation night and other things for fundraising. We are in Albany, New York.
