(AP) - The House unanimously passed a bill to help families of developmentally disabled children get treatment for a range of disabilities, including autism, Down Syndrome and spina bifida. The bill expands the state's subsidized health insurance program for children - known as KidCare - to cover physical, speech and occupational therapy and other treatments and diagnostic screenings for the diseases. For low income families, the subsidized premiums for KidCare vary depending on the size of a family and the family's income, but most pay less than $20 a month. Under the measure, families with developmentally disabled children who don't meet the normal income requirements for the program would also be able to get into KidCare by paying the full premium of $110 a month per child.
