Guest guest
hey all - i am very grateful for all the replies to my beeswax & lanolin quest! the hand cream was made, ultimately, with a grated-up beeswax candle i had & i held off on the salves. i am not a warehouse member (yet) so that option wouldn't work for me, much as i'd like it. as far as salve making goes, my plan is to infuse some oil (probably olive oil) with a few herbs, probably st. john's wort, plantain, comfrey and calendula, and then to make a salve one adds shaved beeswax to the finished, strained oil over very low heat & tests the consistency of the salve by putting a bit on a spoon & sticking it in the freezer, & then adjusting to add more wax or oil as befits the consistency one wants (the wax hardens up the salve). to make an infused oil, there are a million methods. mostly the two basic approaches are to steep dried herb (the ratios vary from 1:1 to 1:4 depending on who you ask) in the desired carrier oil for: 10 days to 3 weeks at room temperature to 100 degrees, or 1-24 hours in a carefully monitored double boiler, keeping the oil's temp around 110 degrees. then strain the oil. for a wider variety of details, one can google salve making... hope that helps? & i'm still curious if anyone knows, in this great mill city, if there is any stone-grinding to be found? or the use of a good flour mill...? lisa
