finding grass-fed and organic meat at regular shops...?

hello everyone!

i've been interested in traditional foods for a while now but had been

a vegetarian for 10 years so its a slow transition. i'm beginning to

try and find grass-fed and organic meats and while i know that i can

get them at co-ops or at the warehouse, i am unable to get to those

places due to having no car. so i thought i would call a meat shop a

little closer to where i live. i've never been in there, but i called

the osseo meat market (http://www.osseomeats.com/) in osseo, mn (a

little bit north of minneapolis). i asked the lady who answered the

phone if they had these things available: lard, organic meat, and

grass-fed beef. she put me on hold. after waiting a while, a guy came

on and i asked the questions again. he said they " might " have lard. he

said he wasn't sure what i was asking when i said " organic meat " and

that " of course all the meat is all-natural and hormone-free. " i asked

about grass fed beef and he said " yeah, i'm pretty sure its all grass

fed here. "

has anyone been to this place? since i've never bought meat before i

have no way to compare just how common/uncommon it is to find

organic/grass-fed at " regular " shops. if all their stuff was grass-fed

wouldn't they be advertising that like crazy? but then again, osseo is

kind of old-fashioned, maybe they have stuff like that but don't think

to make a big deal out of it? i'm just worried because i didn't feel

like i could trust what they said but don't think they can

misrepresent their products either.

thanks for any help you can give to me as a beginner!

I have never been there, but i have done what you're trying to do and

know how hard it is. They probably don't have a clue how the meat was

raised, unless they know the farmer it came from. It's possible, but

you have to ask them details. Most of the time animals are finished on

grain and corn. THAT is what you want to ask. Everyone pastures

their cows, it's cheaper of course. But they should not be finished on

corn, it affects the omega 3 fats. There is your big challenge. If he

tells you where the cows come from, you could call the farmer.

Otherwise, you must assume they're corn finished.
