Guest guest
we had a visit w/ the neurologist a couple of days ago... talked about the latest diagnosis - tourettes syndrome and how to manage it if the self injurous behaviors get worse. one of nolan's stress behaviors is 'the cave man grunt' (like clearing your throat constantly). anyway, the doctor told me that he just had to prescribe an antipsychotic for a kid who was about to be expelled from school because of his constant throat clearing. it was very distracting to the other students. hmmm. behavior brought on by stress but instead of reducing the stress at school, just put him on drugs. i'm not blaming parents - they're doing what they have to do. and i'm glad the drugs are available for use when needed. i just think it's sad that this kid has to be one of the medicated when with a little effort on the part of the school and maybe home as well it could be avoided. Guest guest
Risperdal (an antipsychotic) nearly sent my father to a nursing home. Luckily there were 2 pharmacists in the family who realized what was going on and had the drug discontinued. Otherwise he'd be in a nursing home today instead of at home with my Mother. He didn't have the indications for an antipsychotic to begin with (he'd had a stroke). He became psychotic on the drug but went back to normal after it was discontinued. I'm not saying that these drugs are never needed but I am saying that a lot of times people are dealing with side effects of medication and don't even know it. Guest guest
At ARD mtg yesterday, I was told that they school system could do nothing more for my child than what they are doing now. After the diagnosis of Autism, the psychiatrist believed that the self contained would be the best place for my son since he was so far behind. The only problem is that my school district doesnt have self contained classrooms. They did away with all of them. They only have the alternate education for severe cases and everyone else is in general education. I said all this to say that they told me to check into more medication for my son. They told me to think about 3-4 meds mixture. They said that might help my son with his education. They also said that they would not accept the evaluation done by outside psychiatrist and psycologist. They kept their own that states my son is ADHD. I HATE that our school system has become a pill pusher to make their jobs easier and save them money by not offering certain class settings. fridgudare2003 wrote: Risperdal (an antipsychotic) nearly sent my father to a nursing home. Guest guest
i wonder if the district will be there when the liver and any other major organs shut down in a few years when the cocktail does it's damage? i'm all for meds short term or long term if they help and there is no other alternative. but it seems in this case there is an alternative - self contained classroom. the teachers don't know how to teach so their answer is more drugs? that's simply stupid. Guest guest
File a TEA complaint against them. They have been strictly instructed by the State Board of Education against telling parents to medicate their children. They are legally obligated to provide FAPE for your son. If they don't have the appropriate setting that they themselves have recommended, then they are REQUIRED to make it. nna No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Guest guest
That is what I am going through. But I told them I am not going to frug my son up just so they can push him off to a corner and not have to deal with his condition. And he needs one on one attention too. They don't offer this for him either. Ann Re: Re: THE MEDICATED CHILD At ARD mtg yesterday, I was told that they school system could do nothing more for my child than what they are doing now.
