Guest guest
Regarding Obama, he is a former civil rights lawyer. His website statement on autism states, " Support Americans with Autism. More than one million Americans have autism, a complex neurobiological condition that has a range of impacts on thinking, feeling, language, and the ability to relate to others. As diagnostic criteria broaden and awareness increases, more cases of autism have been recognized across the country. Barack Obama believes that we can do more to help autistic Americans and their families understand and live with autism. He has been a strong supporter of more than $1 billion in federal funding for autism research on the root causes and treatments, and he believes that we should increase funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to truly ensure that no child is left behind. More than anything, autism remains a profound mystery with a broad spectrum of effects on autistic individuals, their families, loved ones, the community, and education and health care systems. Obama believes that the government and our communities should work together to provide a helping hand to autistic individuals and their families. " " In the U.S. Senate, Obama cosponsored the Healthy Kids Act of 2007 and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Reauthorization Act of 2007 to ensure that more American children have affordable health care coverage. " You can also read his ideas for healthcare coverage- http://www.barackobama com/issues/healthcare/ Also earlier this year, he earmarked- " $650,000 to Easter Seals Metropolitan Chicago (ESMC), for its therapeutic School and Center for Autism Research: Illinois has seen a 353% increase in autism since 1993, and the ESMC Therapeutic School and Center for Autism Research responds to this trend. ESMC currently operates three Therapeutic Day Schools that serve students with autism/profound developmental disabilities referred from 50+ Illinois school districts through a broad spectrum of academic and therapeutic services. The new Therapeutic School and Center for Autism Research seeks to build upon this history and provide students from across Illinois with access to a state-of-the-art facility. " http://obama.senate.gov/press/070622-obama_announces_4/ HTH, Anne -- Obama? Autism vaccines Hi everyone, Does anyone know what Senator Obama's stance is on the Autism bill? I heard on the news that he has a pharmaceutical lobbyist on his staff although he said this person is a state and not federal lobbyist. Not that it makes me feel any better. Also I would be curious as so why the " New " evidence against vaccines and autism is allowed to be printed when it's full of holes. Do any of you really think that research is not going forward because researchers are concentrating on vaccines? I think the drug companies would love anything else to be causing this and would be working very hard to find an answer that they can develop life long drugs for. Even better say that genes are responsible, there is nothing you can do so go home and do ABA and pray. Only when it happens to someone close to you (and now there are so many of us you can't turn your cheek) suddenly that answer doesn't seem acceptable. I've always thought that autism needs to affect every extended family in some way for the research and the cries for help to really be heard. We have 60 or so kids on our street and 4 of them have autism under the age of 12. One in 150? That's a joke I think it's higher and until some real progress is made we'll be vaccine free just in case. I don't believe we live in a Genetic cesspool it's just not scientifically possible for these kinds of numbers to happen spontaneously. Guest guest
At the NAA conference, it was stated by several professionals there that the real numbers are 1 in 76 six year-olds and so we don't really know about children as young as three at this time - probably higher than 1 in 76... 1 in 150 refers to 13 year-olds. > > Hi everyone, > Does anyone know what Senator Obama's stance is on the Autism bill? Guest guest
I believe someone previously posted that Obama has more than one staff member with a relative affected by Autism. This is good because it means he has had to be confronted with it on a somewhat personal level. I feel better about that than those that don't know someone personally affected by this disorder and just have no clue as to the battles we face. Just my opinion, of course! > > Regarding Obama, he is a former civil rights lawyer. His website > statement > on autism states, " Support Americans with Autism. Guest guest
I also came across this- Improve services for people with autism & their families. Obama co-sponsored improving services for people with autism & their families Amends the Public Health Service Act to require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to: convene, on behalf of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee, a Treatments, Interventions, and Services Evaluation Task Force to evaluate evidence-based biomedical and behavioral treatments and services for individuals with autism; establish a multi-year demonstration grant program for states to provide evidence-based autism treatments, interventions, and services. establish planning and demonstration grant programs for adults with autism; award grants to states for access to autism services following diagnosis; award grants to University Centers of Excellence for Developmental Disabilities to provide services and address the unmet needs of individuals with autism and their families; make grants to protection and advocacy systems to address the needs of individuals with autism and other emerging populations of individuals with disabilities; and award a grant to a national nonprofit organization for the establishment and maintenance of a national technical assistance center for autism services and information dissemination. Guest guest
And unless he wasn't there the day the Senate voted on the Combating Autism Act, then he voted for it, because it passed unanimously. Guest guest
I'm not voting for any presidential candidate on the basis of an autism bill. You can't hold them accountable. However, I will harass my local state and US representatives until I am blue in the face. > > I also came across this- > > Improve services for people with autism & their families. > Obama co-sponsored improving services for people with autism & their > families > Amends the Public Health Service Act to require the Secretary of Health and > Human Services to: > convene, on behalf of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee, a > Treatments, Interventions, and Services Evaluation Task Force to evaluate > evidence-based biomedical and behavioral treatments and services for > individuals with autism; > establish a multi-year demonstration grant program for states to provide > evidence-based autism treatments, interventions, and services. > establish planning and demonstration grant programs for adults with autism; > award grants to states for access to autism services following diagnosis; > award grants to University Centers of Excellence for Developmental > Disabilities to provide services and address the unmet needs of individuals > with autism and their families; > make grants to protection and advocacy systems to address the needs of > individuals with autism and other emerging populations of individuals with > disabilities; and > award a grant to a national nonprofit organization for the establishment and > maintenance of a national technical assistance center for autism services > and information dissemination. > Directs the Comptroller General to issue a report on the financing of autism > services and treatments. > Source: Promise for Individuals With Autism Act (S.937 & HR.1881) 07-HR1881 > on Apr 17, 2007 > http://www.issues2000.org/2008/Barack_Obama_Health_Care.htm > > Anne > > -- Obama?
