Introduction to Using Verbal Behavior and Natural Environment Teaching

in the Classroom

January 14th, 2004

Made Possible by:

e Quinby, Behavior Consultant And

Bucks County Intermediate Unit, Early Intervention

Workshop Description

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is recognized by the Surgeon General as

the only treatment for autism that is backed up by scientific evidence

demonstrating its efficacy

(http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/mentalhealth/chapter3/sec6.html#a

utism).

While there are many school-based ABA programs, most ignore Skinners'

analysis of verbal behavior. Using the analysis of language as a

behavior that is under the influence of the principles of operant

conditioning provides a viable model for helping individuals with a

language deficit. Teachers influenced by this analysis, and who apply

it's principles, focus strongly on teaching language across its

functional classes leading to a more spontaneous and complex language

repertoire.

This workshop will provide an overview of how these principles are being

applied in public school (Pre-K - 8) classrooms. The following

instructional recommendations and procedures will be covered:

* Pairing with Reinforcement: Building Rapport with the Learner

* Manding (Requesting): Capturing and Contriving Motivation

* Classroom Management of Problem Behavior

* Natural Environment Teaching (NET)

* Intensive Teaching: Instructional Variables

* Teaching Play Skills

Presenter

M. Caffrey, M.Ed is the director of the Verbal Behavior Network

(http://www.verbalbehaviornetwork.com), a collaborative web-based

solution he designed to assist school districts and agencies in training

teachers and related professionals who work with children with autism

and other developmental disabilities. He consults with schools,

consortia and agencies in developing cost-effective staff training

programs. Mr. Caffrey developed the VBN Teacher Training Model, which

provides an infrastructure for public schools to " home grow " experts

(Board Certified Behavior Analysts). This model has now been adopted by

more than forty school districts in eight counties throughout New

Jersey.

Outcome Objectives

This workshop will demonstrate through extensive use of video, how best

practice procedures are being applied in public school settings. The

primary objective of this presentation is to provide the audience with a

conceptual framework, by illustrating how the principles of ABA can be

woven together to manage behaviors and teach language and other

important skills to children with autism and other developmental

disabilities. Classroom teachers, parents, paraprofessionals, and

specialists would all benefit from this presentation.
