Need info on education system in TEXAS

We recently moved here from Oklahoma. WE moved on the outskirts of

Wichita Falls, very near Wichita Falls, with the intent on using that

school system (and my son is getting therapy there, and we are

attending church there, etc). After we moved, we found that we are in

the ARCHER school district, which is quite far from us. My son is

only 5, and still in a 5 pt. harness car seat, so I will not bus

him........and it is not feasible for me to drive over 30 minutes to

school and back four times in a day...especially since we have NO

other business in that town, and then turn around and have him to

therapy in Wichita Falls. WE are talking HOURS of driving in a day.

He simply cannot handle that. When I talked to the special education

man for the WFISD. He informed me that I cannot transfer my son to

WF, he has to attend Archer. This is without any information on us,

plain and simple, no. We had not put in for a transfer or anything.

Is this right? Is there a no transfer from one city to another rule? I

know there can't be because so many other people are driving in to WF

to school.....

If someone knows the policy on this or how we can get around it please

let me know.

I called the most recommended school, Cunningham, and she asked

immediately where we lived, and then never returned my call.

Please help me.

Unfortunately, it is at a school district's discretion to allow or not allow

transfers. My school district has a transfer " committee " that allows certain

transfers in or out. I live in a rural area too, and believe the school

district isn't giving my son what he needs, but I don't have any

alternatives, because the one school district in the county that isn't run

by the special ed. co-op, does not accept special ed transfers. You can

thank No Child Left Behind for that. School districts are doing everything

they can to decrease their " percentages " on the special ed. population.

There is a private school that has a program in Wichita Falls. I

don't know a lot about it, but just wanted to make sure you were

aware of it. The school changed names this year -- it is a private

school for regular kids but they started a special autism classroom

a year or so ago. It was formerly called the Episcopal School, but

they changed the name to something like Christ Acadamy. If you

aren't familiar with this and need the name of it, I can find out

for you. I have a friend who teaches there, but she doesn't teach

in the autism classroom.

I am not really sure about OK rules, however were we live the school itself has

to be classified as either an " open " or " closed " campus. Open means that it is

open for others who reside anywhere in texas, you have to pay a fee if you do

not live in the district but it is normally minimal. If it is classifed as

closed then nobody can go to that school unless they live in the distict.

we moved to the district but was told no, they didn't accept out of district.

after we moved to the district i found out that his particular elementary school

accepted students out of district if they qualified for deaf ed.
