Guest guest
Hi. what's the name of the private school (not for profit) in Houston that your twins went to? Are you satisfied with the school? My son was just recently diagnosed with Autism and he's age 2 yrs and 7 months. To date, he is still being handled by project ECI-Grow. But my concern is, he'll be turning 3 yrs this May when he'll then be transitioned to PPCD program but it's off for summer, which means he'll get no services/theraphy for 3 months?! I don't want to wait for my son to regress that's why we're looking for programs to best suit him. can anyone give me suggestions on good schools, programs? do i need to bring him to a DAN doctor at an early age? he does not have any bowel problems though. My son is not talking yet until now, no words and doctors from Texas Children's suggest a more intensive theraphy on speech and ABA.... I hope anyone can direct me which way to go...i feel time is of the essence and information are becoming too overwhelming....Has anyone seen Dr. Volpe??? Bernadette PS. by the way, i live in houston, southwest part....thanks! RE-EVALUATION BY DISTRICT REQUIRED? My twins were referred to CFISD by ECI in 2/2005 when they turned 3 with an initial speech delay diagnosis. They had been diagnosed with Autism in December 2003 by Stanford University Hospital in California prior to us moving to Houston. Both twins were also diagnosed with Autism by the district in 4/2005 and had been attending PPCD services half days in addition to their enrollment in a private, not-for-profit school in Houston, also half days. One of them mainstreamed into public kindergarten with the help of a shadow (prior to being his shadow she had been the para-professional in his PPCD class) at the beginning of schoolyear 07/08 while my other is still attending the non-profit private school. Because of the longer school day at his pivate school he no longer attends the public school but receives speech services through Spring-Branch ISD once per week for 45 minutes because that's the district the private school is located in. Now I get a letter from Cy-Fair asking if I'm interested in a reevaluation. Am I required to have him reevaluated if we decide to enroll him in public school with the coming 08/09 school year? Why would he need a reevaluation (he'll still have Autism...)? Could we just request an ARD when the time comes to work out his IEP etc? The letter, btw is the " Private School/Home school questionnaire " . Any input would be greatly appreciated! ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! Guest guest
They DO???????????????????????? Definitely not in our district. More statewide discrepancies, where kids are either born into the right or wrong zip code. Ho hum. Plano recommmended an ESL class for our child when he was in PPCD in order to get summer services for one measly hour a week. This was only because they were ordered by a hearing officer to consider ESY, which they had failed to do at all the previous summer. So that's what PISD came up with. That's just so appropriate for a communication disorder, dontcha think? Sorry, but the sarcasm is unavoidable. That must be what happens when you lose due process. The districts become even more outrageous in their bold one-size-fits-all, delivery model/administrative convenience/resource management-dictates-all approach to IEP development. Guest guest
You have to prove that your child needs PPCD and it would be a hardship to the child if it did not have PPCD. To do that, you would basically have to have the child evaluated after a long absence to see if it qualifies the following summer for PPCD. By then, it is too late. Guest guest
Thank you so much for all your suggestions, I truly appreciate it and will definitely look into it. I know that PPCD runs through summer but ECI mentioned to me that they only accept kids if they show signs of regression. But any parent would'nt want to wait for their child to regress right??? , do you mind if I ask what Insurance are you in now? Cause you mentioned that you've been reimbursed 100% so far, I thought that's really very good. Guest guest
So as far as you know, this just started in summer 2007? Maybe our case has resulted in some meaningful changes then. Guest guest
I know Dallas offers summer PPCD, but I am talking about Plano specifically. I have been told conclusively by the district that there is no summer PPCD in Plano and the posts to the contrary were mistaken. It doesn't matter how well you know the law when there isn't even the option of getting ESY in your district. Or should I should request they bus my three year old to Dallas to get the services he needs? I wish standing your ground worked the same in every district and every ARD meeting. When we stood our ground, Plano filed suit on us. The more knowledge we gained, the harder they fought.
