Where Dreams become Reality! Cody’s Field of Dreams is an exciting opportunity for children with special needs or handicaps from four years of age to sixth grade to participate in a baseball camp. The baseball camp will be led by a diverse group of volunteers from all over the community. The baseball training is not designed to be competitive, but rather a time of fun and friendship building. During the camp, each child will be assigned a “Buddy” who will assist them throughout the practices and the final game. Parents will also be encouraged to assist with the camp, but it is not necessary. Listed below is the schedule of events and some of the exciting details of our third annual Cody’s Field of Dreams. Guest guest
I don't know of a camp in the Austin area, but the Miracle League of Austin is a baseball league for special needs kids. It is run by the Town & Country Optimists. They built a special field that will accommodate wheel chairs and walkers. The field is beautiful and opened a year ago. Much of the funds to build the field were raised by Nolan , the Round Rock Express, and JB & Sandy from Mix 94.7. Like the camp that was mentioned earlier, each player has a buddy (high school and college age kids), who stays with them and helps them the whole time. The season is 7 weeks long, one game each Saturday. The game is usually 2 innings (about an hour), with each player getting to bat and score in each inning (they don't keep score.everyone wins!). The players' challenges run from autism to downs syndrome to severe physical issues and everything in between. The motto of the Miracle League is that every kid should get to play baseball..and participation is open to any kid who couldn't participate in more typical team settings. Registration is $50 per child, but scholarships are available for families that can't meet that. They receive a jersey and cap, and usually get a lot of other stuff donated to the league. My 8 year old sons (HFA) have participated the last 2 seasons (spring and fall) and LOVED it. My husband and I enjoy it as well. It is a really uplifting time, with all the " fans " (players' families) cheering for all the players on both teams. The coaches are amazing and have huge hearts. Round Rock Express players usually make an appearance or two, play a little with the kids, and sign autographs. We will definitely do it again this spring. I heard that registration opens February 1st and can be done online. If interested, just google Austin Miracle League and follow the prompts to register. Between the 2 innings, there is a " stretch " time where all the players gather around the backstop and sing Take Me Out to the Ball Game and then do the chicken dance. My sons love to sing Take Me Out to the Ball Game. One time, was in the rest room when they sang the song. He came running out, crying " Nooooo " because he had missed getting to sing. Brown, who coordinates the whole thing, (along with her husband, who is also a coach), heard crying and asked me why. When I told her, she went running over to the backstop and made everyone do it all over again, so that could participate. That was one of the kindest things anyone has ever done for my special child. I didn't have to ask. She just knew that he really needed to sing and she immediately made it happen for him. I can't say enough about the wonderful organization and am so thankful that my sons have been able to take part in it. in Cedar Park
