Guest guest
It is necessary that by all means all as parent's go check and observe children in class even if they have no disability, It is very important to see who besides the teacher is working with them including even PE and music... why??? Cause they are their influence to our children future and who will give them also pride and honor and not humiliation and dishonor, They are not there to dominate your child and we as parent's should be aware of that. A lot;s of the aids and teacher's and other's have also different religious life styles and belief's in which in many case they will implement with our children. There are a lot's of bad mouthing and politics within school districts , school staff and jealousy within even our teacher's in our schools that we may not see but are an influence in what is going to be next for our children, I know that this is normal everywhere else but this are our children and that should not be a part of their childhood living experience specially when they have auitsm or other disability . Why M I writing this? Cause from my experience yesterday I learned that I need to watch my children more closely and frecuently and not to trust so much on other's. I do not think that people are trying to harm our children but I do believe their influences can harm our children specially when this people are not trained properly and district's keep trying to hire non professionals for aids or staff.... to save funds to the SE department. And this is already after we settle, with lawyers and have done everything by the book.
Guest guest
Well, after my many experiences, I would really fight to get to visit. Even a hour would be good. I would just say you need an hour one day in the morning, and one day in the afternoon. What I did was this. I talked to the principal and informed her that I wanted to come and visit one day to see how my child interacts. Then I also talked to the teacher, telling her I wanted to visit one day to see how my child interacts. Well, they said, " Sure, when and what time? " I said, " I don't know yet, what time/days are good for you? " They said, " uhhh, it will be fine. " And it was kind of left out in the open. Then, one day when I had time, I just went to the school office, told them I was coming to observe and that I had previously spoke to the principal. They gave me the visitor badge and off I went to the classroom. Another trick is to go pick up your kid for an appointment: go to the office to get your badge and tell them you will walk to class to get your child and just do it. The office personnel never say anything when I do that, after all, I have my badge. I will say that I ran into a lot of " its best to come at this time or that time " , but unless they say you absolutely can't do it, show up anytime. Another thing is if they don't allow it, I would call and keep calling up the chain and be very nice and explain to them you need to see how he is socializing. They will look pretty guilty to their bosses if they admit they won't let you visit. Heidi N **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
Friendswood will not allow parent's to visit without permission from the principal. I requested to visit and was told no as I would disrupt the class. Guest guest
I can understand the not disrupting, but surely you can watch thru the window on the door, or even from another point in the building thru windows. As a former childcare director, I would often go to an empty hall to see what is going on in the classes in my wing thru the windows overlooking the playground (teachers will text each other that the boss is around (or a parent) and classrooms are then perfect for observation--unless you do a strip search, they will get a cell in without them being allowed in use during class) I volunteer at my son's school, and I will observe his class thru the door--often not even the teachers see me. I have been very pleased with what I have seen. > Well, after my many experiences, I would really fight to get to visit. > Even > a hour would be good. Guest guest
I am a teacher. This so called " board policy " is totally illegal! You have the right to visit your child's class at anytime and as often as you want. Guest guest
Any lawyer out there have any input. I have never visited a class before so how can they say that I would be disturbing the class. The reading class is a general education high school class with 7 students in it. It makes one wonder what they are really doing in that class. kellymac92 wrote: I am a teacher. This so called " board policy " is totally illegal! Guest guest
My point exactly. You volunteer so you aren't that noticed. If a teacher, principal or councelor invites you or knows ahead of time that you are comming you will never see what things are really like. They prepare for you to see only what they want you to see.. My oldest child is as old or older than most of you on the list (42). She had numerous physical, mental and emotional problems as a child even up to high school age. The early and late 70s were horrible as far as school was concerened. I've been involved in the raising of 3 of my 6 grandchildren, 2 of whom I was the legal guardian at some point even as recently as 2006- 2007. I've been to so many ARDs, IEPs and whatever that when any of the school personnel saw me comming they called me by name. That includes even the HISD security cops at the door. Westbury High School tried to pull some goodies on me and I immediately went to the school with my 3 ring binder full of Fed, State, and County laws, not to mention the advocate, therapyst, Dr. what have you. When they realized I knew what was what they backed off. When ever I talked to a principal/teacher someone else was either in the room with us or someone was listening over the intercom. With the help of this list I've learned a lot especially the list of things to say at ARDs and IEPs. The school is NOT your friend...keep that in mind. They have their own agenda. Keep what you think to yourself until you have observed all of what you need to know and then call for a meeting of everyone that has anything to do with your child. That's when you voice all your concerns from your journal you kept while volunteering. Dee C > > >
