Guest guest
I am happy to see I am not the only one with kids who do this! So, it sounds pretty normal. Sometimes the reactions of our Nursery workers or Sunday school teachers worry me. They wonder if the kids have to go to the bathroom or is they are uncomfortable. These days you never know if some well meaning person might over react. I have asked the kids doctor about this behavior and he is not worried about it. He says, well maybe they need to scratch! He is a father to 7 children so he knows how things are. :-) Lee Ann > > > > My typically developing son has problems with his “butt > itching.†It is getting better, but it is a source of frustration > with me! > > > > > > > > , Mom to Phoebe 3 Ds and cystic fibrosis, and Nolan 6, speech > delay > > > > Proud wife to Steve, the love of my life... > > <mailto:DownSyndromeInfoExchange > >
Guest guest
It is always good when you have a doctor who is realistic and has some life experiences to go along with his brains! I recently took two of my children with Downs into a new ENT office. We have a wonderful ENT however his office is 40 minutes away and we always have to wait at least an hour to get in to see him. It is getting to be too much with 4 children who have ear problems. So I took the two girls in to see a local audiologist. This clinic is 1 mile from home. The other is 25 miles plus I have to go through a very busy town. She wants to put hearing aids on one of the girls so she had us see the ENT who also comes to the local clinic. So we came back the next week to see the doctor. He was very nice. Great with and I was very pleased. After the appointment I was in line to check out and he came out of the room and wanted to talk to me. He quietly said I have to ask you a question because my wife, who is the receptionist, will want to know Why would anyone adopt a child with Downs, even more so, four children with Downs? He was pleasant about it and not judgemental at all. So I explained the best I could. He said, I bet your are voting for Sara Palin, I said ABSOLUTLY!! He smiled, said see you next time, and went back into the room. I would call that a teaching moment for me and a learning moment for him! :-) I have always really appreciated our Pediatrician and how REAL he is. No explanations need with him. Lee Ann > > I hate to " under react " but seriously. Freud, noticed a child interest in his or her genitals, as did Maslow. I LOVE DRS with kids. They have been through the ropes and they know that a cigar is a cigar. > whether we like it or not, a child does show interest in their " parts " . Get it documented with your doctor, sounds like you have > > Steph > >
Guest guest
I will add one more thing- when was close to 3 she started doing what appeared to be masturbation types of behavior and had a sudden interest in her bottom. At first I thought it was all just self exploring/normal stuff but then she started to take objects in the bath tub and rub or hit herself with them. I of course began to suspect abuse, cause where on earth would a kid think of such things?? I will make a very long story short- she was dx with a skin disease that is auto-immune in nature that affects the mucus membranes of the genitals. It's extremely PAINFUL and that was what she was doing- trying to rub/hit at the pain. Once we had it under control ALL that stopped. So if your child is paying a lot of undue attention to their genitals, you may want to take a closer look to make sure there is no irritation, change laundry soaps/softeners, step up hygiene issues or even try using a barrier cream, just to see if something else is going on there. ( I like Burt's Bee's diaper ointment- smells GREAT, has no chemicals in it ) Carol in ILMom to , 8 DS My problem is not how I look. It's how you see me.VOTE NOBAMA '08NO TO OBAMA, SOCIALISM & RETREATJoin our Down Syndrome information group - http://health. groups.yahoo. com/group/ DownSyndromeInfo Exchange/ Listen to oldest dd's music http://www.myspace. com/vennamusic [DownSyndromeInfoEx change] Re: now - hands in the pants I am happy to see I am not the only one with kids who do this!
