Guest guest
Lone Star Learning Center (north Texas)'s conference, " Teaching Verbal Behavior in a Classroom Setting " , was a huge success on Saturday. Our speakers included Kelle Wood, M.Ed., BCBA, Gail Wayman, M.Ed., BCABA, Franco, CCC-SLP, BCBA, and representatives from 2 local school districts. We had over 100 people in attendance, with 80% of those being professionals including educators from local school districts as well as those as far away as Wichita Falls, and Louisiana. We also had representation from ECI, Easter Seals, Autism Treatment Center, typical preschools, and several SLP students. It was such a great way to kick off 2004 seeing so many professionals dedicated to helping children with autism succeed. The educational model of ABA and the Analysis of Verbal Behavior is being implemented in private and public school settings nationwide, including 3 private schools in Texas, and of course Carrollton- Farmers Branch and ville ISD public schools (2 of our speakers). These two school districts did an awesome job of presenting their dedication to children with autism. The professionals in attendance were able to see how this is something they too could implement within their own districts. Kelle Wood is also consulting with 10 public school districts in Texas, either helping them implement ABA classrooms, or training teachers on teaching children with autism using the science of ABA. From our turnout on Saturday, there are many more interested in this educational model. At our conference we announced that Lone Star Learning Center will be replicating POAC-New Jersey's teacher training model here in Texas. To kick off the program, Lone Star Learning Center is awarding scholarships for 2 professionals in our area to attend Dr. Carbone's Workshop #1 " Teaching Communication Skills to Children with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities " . This workshop is being held April 20-22, in Austin. The scholarships will cover the $250 registration fee for 2 professionals. We should have the application ready in the next week or so on our website. More details about the model will be announced soon. POAC's model is already being replicated in Massachusettes and Pennsylvania. It's now time to replicate it here in Texas.
