Guest guest
I am on between 1.5 and 1.75 grain of Armour daily, and 12.5 mg cortisol. I am able to work which I had not been before but I have very frequent small crashes, if I get over excited or do too much. They are very much not fun. I am overdue a visit to Dr. R right now. The business has been growing explosively and I have been trying desperately to keep up without overdoing things. I intend to ask Dr. R if we can check my sex hormones although he feels it won't tell us much until my periods stop. Something else is going on with me than thyroid/adrenals, I have been thinking of ordering saliva tests for those though he also doesn't like those. Guest guest
Jan, Glad to hear that you are doing well! That’s wonderful. To All: I might be able to recommend my new family doctor. I’ll know more at my next blood draw. She is in Flower Mound. Doesn’t even blink when it comes to Armour, treats by symptoms, but we’ll she how she reacts if my TSH is suppressed. I’ll get back on her next month. Yes, I have a question. I have been doing the South Beach Diet and have lost 7 lbs over the last week and a half and feel that maybe I should back my Armour off since I’m getting some heart palps and alittle pain several hours after taking my afternoon dosage. My next blood draw is in 3 weeks. I still have another 30 pounds to loose. I really have no problems with backing off ¼ grain. I’m going to call my doctor today. So my question is: What has everyone else done while loosing weight? My doctor really does listen and has me involved in my treatment so I’d like to get ideas of what others have done before speaking with her. Guest guest
I haven't actually updated since my last visit with Dr. R early June. Things are going slow for me. I am working my way up another 1/2 grain. Got some heart palps and anxiety so taking it very slowly. The good news was that my DHEA has doubled since last September. The other hormones are being very stubborn (especially the iron), but all in all I have more energy. YEAH! I am trying to be better at taking my supplements...vitamins, etc. Hopefully this will help me tolerate my armour increase better. I just spent four days walking around Disney World and did great! Now, I am tired and will take it as easy as I can with my seven year old home with me. As long as I can sleep in (meaning 8am or later) I do real good throughout the day. So, I actually look forward to summertime. I am pretty brain dead from my trip, so can't think of any good jokes right now. Hello, out there! Drop in and say, " Hi! " How are you doing? Guest guest
Lynn, I have suffered from endometriosis for many years. Going on the birth control can suppress your ovaries and help to slow down the progression of the disease. Also, being on a good dose of progesterone, like Dr R. has me on, will suppress your ovaries. The only way to " cure " endo is surgery and it may or may not come back. I have had 7 surgeries since 1997 when I was finally diagnosed. If you are in Houston, I can send you to the best of the best drs with respect to endometriosis. Just let me know. Guest guest
On the endometriosis, there is a doctor I've worked with and he has found that many women with this condition have been exposed to mold toxins. Depending upon your genotype, your body may not recognize or eliminate the toxins, thus they do systemic damage. You can find some general info on the impact of toxins on several of this doctor's websites: www.biotoxins.info (there is a simple screening test - fairly reasonably priced on this website) www.chronicneurotoxins.com (another simple screening test - not as comprehensive, but still very reliable) www.moldwarriors.com This doc (Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker) is the real deal and his treatment protocol, along with adequate thyroid hormone brought me back from near disability (I was at that point when I went to see this doc in land). Dr. Shoe works with a PhD who worked for the EPA, who had independently been looking at this problem. Dr. Shoe has treated many patients (7000+ the last time I heard him speak - as he is a frequent speaker at FM/CFS, Environmental health and alternative medicine conferences). He is an MD from Duke that was in family practice and started seeing patients with illnesses from exposure to toxic waterways in his area and Lyme disease and later folks (lots of teachers and folks working for governments) that were exposed to " sick buildings " . And, there are other (independent) reports of endometriosis being caused by toxin exposure. Here's one example of dioxin: http://www.geocities.com/endocause/ And, you can find lots of others. IMHO, the reason why mainstream medicine hasn't picked up on alot of this is that there still is a huge lack of understanding of the impact of toxins on our bodies as a whole. Again, because most docs just look at specific organs or systems. And, there are tremendous legal impacts, so there is tremendous pressure to minimize the role of toxins (mold in particular) as a huge contributor to many chronic health problems. Again, treating the symptoms, rather than getting to the root cause. If folks are interested, I can get more info on endometriosis from this doctor, as I have annual phone consultations with him monitoring my health and I remain on his protocol as a preventative, given how ubiquitous mold is in our environment. Texas is one of the worst states for mold exposure. Guest guest
There are many known causes of endometriosis, including environmental and genetics. The Endometriosis Association is a great sourse of information. http://www.endometriosisassn.org/ I am also part of a yahoo group for the EA-Houston chapter. Guest guest
I thought that, too. But when I reduced my dose by 30 mg after losing a lot of weight, I did not feel well. So I went back to the original dose. I may need an intermediate dose, but I sure do hate those 15 mg increments. In any case, this is a highly individual matter. Weight is only one factor in dosing. Tolerance issues and estrogen status may be equally important. Does weight loss usually mean that you'll need less Armour? Guest guest
Thanks for the insight Jan. I had really not thought about possibly needing to lower the dosage with weight loss. I’ve been losing an average of 1 pound per week. I hope to keep going at this rate. I still have a fair amount of weight to lose. I’m going to add the question to my many that I have for Dr R. We see him on Monday. We’re almost all done with the basal temps. So far no broken thermometers. Yeah! Guest guest
Hello Jan, I have not been very active but have been extremely busy--I have been working a lot with my son during the last three years in his tool business after he had a major heart attackand received stents. He is doing great now and has an office crew that is workable. So, I go only when someone is out. He coded seven times in one night which resulted in trauma to the heart. His heart compressing was only 35 but with rehab, medicine, diet, etc. he is back to almost 100%. I finally found a doctor who would help me--Dr. Leffingwell in Arlington, Texas. I was non-functional by the time I had gotten into his office. He was the doctor who first diagnosed hypothyoidism but my ob-gyn who referred me to him, had been renewing my prescriptions. After I had gotten a bad prescription of synthroid (which I took for more than a month without any benefit) I was very sick. I called Dr. Leffingwell's office but his nurse would not give me an appointment for two months. I saw three other doctors in the meantime and they wanted to treat for B-12 deficiency, carpal tunnel, depression, and one even wanted me to seek psychiatric help. (I was a basket case no doubt--but not crazy. ) I still had my prescription for synthroid (even though one doctor had given me another brand which caused a constant cough) had it refilled and started increasing my dosage to 150 rather than 100. My thyroid test showed a high normal when the old test use to be 5 for high normal. I went prepared to argue my case. I went to Soloman's site and copied everything that applied, I took temperatures (which was low, made a chart for every day until the time I saw him, charting how I felt, temperature, all the muscle pains and cramps, the muscle weakness, the pains in my hands, foggy brain (I could not cook what I had always cooked--I could not remember. I had to make a menu, find recipes, do one item at a time. I could not lift a gallon of milk). I began having sweats, indigestion, heart palpations and passing out and sought help from a cardiologist. He was smart and sympathetic. He agreed that it was my thyroid and called Dr. Leffingwell which hastened my getting in sooner. Dr. Leffingwell listened, was not offended by my notes and did not chastise me for increasing my medication. He has always worked with me. He says he treats the patient and not the labs. He agreed that high normal is not normal for me. My TSH is from .3 to 0 and I feel great and have a lot of energy. I exercise, eat right and see Dr. Leffingwell and Dr. Cramer (my cardiologist) regularly. I met you at the cafeteria in Hurst (I believe it was) but at that time my memory was not good. You and one other lady was there, together with my husband and I. Hope you are still doing well. Sorry if this is rambling. Ruth McCown Roll Call! Hello, out there! Drop in and say, "Hi!" Do you have any good (semi-clean) jokes to share? jan nathan
Guest guest
Hey, Jan! I'm glad to hear that you're doing much better. I guess I'm doing okay. My non-existant thyroid is suddenly whacked out - slightly elevated Hashi's antibodies and high Frees on the same dose of Armour I've been on for years. Stoopid non-thyroid. My main problem now seems to be a sleep issue. Dr. Woliner tried for a while to fix that, but finally declared himself stumped. So I've stopped consulting with him and right now I'm just dealing with my local GP and thinking about seeing a sleep specialist and going back on my very expensive med that causes all the lovely side effects. The good news is that despite feeling like I could lie down in the middle of HEB and take a nap at 7 AM, I do have more energy and stamina that I've had for years. I've started doing Bikram Yoga. Yesterday I did a 90 minute class, did the grocery shopping, went out to lunch with friends, did several loads of laundry, and in the evening mowed half the back yard. With a reel mower, no less. That's pretty amazing. Fun - not much right now. I have another veggie garden for the second year. Very small; most of our yard is too shady. This year I have 3 tomato plants (I've already had one tomato), one green pepper, one eggplant, one cantaloupe and one icebox watermelon. I have watermelon the size of a baseball already! In the fall we're going up to CT to see my family (assuming the airlines are still flying). It will be nice to cool off. Who left the oven door open?? The heat this year seems like too much too early. Maybe I'm just getting old! Betsy > > > Hello, out there! > > Drop in and say, " Hi! " > > How are you doing?
