School districts are not required to accept an outside diagnosis. They

can (or may not) take into consideration your doctor's findings but the

school is not bound to accept and/or agree with them. The only way to

get your daughter a diagnosis that is accepted by your school of any of

the Autism spectrum disorders is to request an Autsim evaluation which

is done by the district. Submit a request in WRITING to your school's

diagnostician that you want your daughter evaluated for Autism. And

remember: you don't ever have to agree with their

findings/suggestions/plans. You have the right to disagree. And never

EVER sign any paper until you completely agree with its content!

Schools consider medical doctor's evaluations 'clinical' ones. They

want psychological evaluations instead.

Sorry Stacie, but that's how it works. Even though you have a medical

diagnosis, your child may not qualify for an educational diagnosis which is

what schools go by. It stinks for sure and sometimes kids that need the

help get left out.

Didn't we just establish with the Autism Insurance Bill that Autism was a

medical condition not a psychological one?

Man - these schools scare me with the amount of power they have over our

children and us as parents.

I just talked with a mom yesterday whose school principal CALLED her child's

therapist/clinician without the mom's permission.

It's getting scary and wacko out there for our kids!

Autism is a very silent world; but the potential in that world speaks

volumes.... Texas Autism Advocacy: www.TexasAutismAdvocacy.org

" There are some aspects of a person's life that we have no right to

compromise. We cannot negotiate the size of an institution. No one should live

in one. We cannot debate who should get an inclusive education. Everyone

should. We cannot determine who does and who does not get the right to make

their own choices and forge their own futures. All must. "

Well we presented our schools with evaluations by 3 pediatrics neurologist

(medical doctors) and still wanted to do their own evaluation. When it

comes schools, it is politics, beauracracy and no common sense.

Totally agree and it sounds like alot of us have to retrieve this

battle kinda of like that movie " V " for Vendetta, really.

We've done it their way and it is not working, time for some positive

changes and we will come together to make a differences.

Unfortunately, they can stipulate that they need to do their own AU

evaluation in addition to " considering " (using that term loosely) your

private evaluations. And an AU evaluation is typically made by an AU team -

LSSP (psychologist), SLP, OT/PT, AT, etc. That is why they are referring to

seeing what the psychologist has to say I would suspect. And it is with the

AU evaluation that they will determine if the child meets TEA criteria (not

medical criteria per DSM TR IV) for an AU eligibility. Been around this

situation too often with our youngest son - diagnosed with Asperger's yet he

does not meet TEA criteria for AU.

What I found out that a " school psychologist " does not necessarily have a

PhD. In other world, the title is symbolic.

There is a state certification for Licensed Specialist in School

Psychologists (LSSP's). Typically, these individuals will also be certified

as licensed professional counselors (LPC), licensed marriage and family

therapists (LMFT), etc. Some will go on to further their education to get

their doctorates.

Here is a link to UTA Department of Educational Psychology website that will

better explain the doctoral programs for school psychologists to earn their

PhD.

I once interviewed a " school psychologist " to work with my son on his

home-school program, and he told me that he neither has a master nor PhD.

He was licensed as a school psychologist though.

Either way, it is not that important to me. It was just misleading to the

average Joe.

,

I think the reasoning for the clinical VS psychological evaluations

has to do with academic VS medical needs. I do understand what

you're saying about autism being classified as a medical disorder.

I am not sure whether for school purposes that's helpful or not since

asthma is medical but it does not directly affect how you learn.

On th other hand, cerbal palsy is medical but it needs some

educational accomodations and therapies. Same with Down Syndrome, I

wonder how the UCP and DS guild advocates deal with this issue at

school ARDs?

Anyone have any ideas?

HA - it would help if I did put the link into the email. Tonya's link is

excellent. The one I found only talks about what a doctoral student would

be expected to learn. Thanks Tonya - I am going to do a bit of research on

your link for certain unsavory!

We took in the eval from the phsyc dr. But they did

their own eval last year when she was on stimulant

medications. And the AU team did not have a clue it

was a diag that wew went round and round with during

three years in PPCD a speech therapist, an OT and the

school psyc. that is clueless and then half these

people know her and she is a pleasure.

They want " educational " ones. I had a child psych. evaluation in my hand

when my son was dismissed from special ed. They didn't see an " educational "

need.

I had one too and I asked my school psychologist when they do not

accept it from an outside source. SHe stated that when they observe

something different in the child, they question it. Did you ask them

what difference they saw that she was not learning disabled?
