Guest guest
Hi Carolyn Soryy I'm just reading this. Faith also attended a 2 year old class at 3. Worked really well for potty training, as did the following year when she moved to the 3 year old class. At 5 we kept her another year in preschool. The school had an ABecka class or a developmental class for 3 year olds. No way she could have survived the academics so she changed teachers and stayed with a 3 year old class. The school had 3 3 year old classes and so put her with the oldest ones and with the most experienced teacher. It worked very well. She left preschool knowing all her letters and their sounds and counting to 10. Faith has always "talked" but has apraxia and has always been hard to understand. She communicated fairly well and learned a lot about interpersonal relationships in preschool. ette --------- [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] Seperate Class PlacementToday I volunteered in the Primary(K-2) ESE classroom. I offered because I admire the teacher greatly. Faith had her as a resource teacher and she is wonderful. But, this class is awful. There are 4 boys with DS, 3 other boys, and 1 girl. I worked with 3 of the boys with DS one on one. There are no models for good behavior. No models for school behavior. They wander around, roll on the floor, bang on things. One boy flushed his glasses down the toilet while I was there. These kids have potential, but they are not being well served. They will never get out of this placement because "look at their behavior". How would they know any different. So this is a warning. If your child is in such a placement or you are considering it, go observe, preferably all day. Even this wonderful teacher is at a loss. She knows the potential, but it isn't being met in this environment. BTW, there were 3 or 4 adults in this class of 8 kids. On paper, it sounds great...ettemom to Faith (11)DS
