That is why they call it a " spectrum " . It is a group of disorders that have at

least some common symptoms. There is no way to know the cause at this point in

time. However, it is likely very similar to cancer in that there can be any

number of causes. That is strictly opinion, no proof.

what if the 1 in 150 is not really autism. what if there are several other

conditions that are similar but have different causations and aren't 'it'. sort

of like a viral infection vs a bacterial infection - both make you have a runny

nose and run a fever but they aren't the same.

That is the rate of growth per the autism epidemic.

Autism Facts

. 1 in 150 births.

. Over 1 to 1.5 million Americans.

. Approx 12.5 to 17 million family members

. Growth comparison during the 1990s

~U.S. population increase: 13%

~Disabilities increase: 28.4%

~Autism increase: 1,354 %

. US $90 billion annual health care cost

~90% of costs are in adult services

. Cost of treatment can be reduced by 2/3 with early diagnosis and

intervention

. In 10 years, the annual cost will be $200 - 400 billion

Autism truly is a spectrum disorder, and we KNOW there are multiple causes

of autism. My son has a rare genetic disorder, and it is the second most

common genetic reason for autism. (BTW, a lot of people think that genetic

means it must be inherited, but that's not necessarily true. Many genetic

disorders are " de novo. " They are mutations which occur at fragile

chromosomal regions in an egg or sperm.)

If I may add to the 'genetic' definition: viruses and enviornmental

toxins have been shown by studies to cause gene mutations. So the

word genetic certainly like Geraldine said does not necessarily mean

inherited.
