Guest guest
That is why they call it a " spectrum " . It is a group of disorders that have at least some common symptoms. There is no way to know the cause at this point in time. However, it is likely very similar to cancer in that there can be any number of causes. That is strictly opinion, no proof. Guest guest
Autism truly is a spectrum disorder, and we KNOW there are multiple causes of autism. My son has a rare genetic disorder, and it is the second most common genetic reason for autism. (BTW, a lot of people think that genetic means it must be inherited, but that's not necessarily true. Many genetic disorders are " de novo. " They are mutations which occur at fragile chromosomal regions in an egg or sperm.) Guest guest
If I may add to the 'genetic' definition: viruses and enviornmental toxins have been shown by studies to cause gene mutations. So the word genetic certainly like Geraldine said does not necessarily mean inherited.
