Guest guest
Penny and group, We had the same problem but we had the advantage of Colin being just three years old. I bought two boxes that were big enough to hold all the video tapes. I put one box in a lockable closet so at anyone time he had access to half of the videos. Then gradually I took all the rest away and we put a lock on the compartment that holds the VCR. Now he can access video and DVD watching by asking or as the " reward " component of an activity schedule. We do activity schedules exactly as directed in the book by Shanahan and Krantz. You can order this inexpensive paperback from Different Roads to Learning. , Colin P's mom [ ] need help taking away videos So one of my problems with Kenzie would be taking away videos to make DTT more reinforcing. I have been really bad and he has had open forum on whatever and how ever many videos he wants. Kenzie likes physical play but other than that he has no play skills. I'm interested in ideas that would keep him involved without having to have me be a part of it all the time. I need to get things done especially going into our busy season with our business. We have very little space in our house. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do to replace the videos? Also what should my plan of action be? Should I go cold turkey or put a timer out and he can watch them for so long? I know this is all basic stuff that has been discussed many times but I could still use some direction. Guest guest
You might also want to try limiting times of day videos are " available " to wean him off. You might want to start with less critical times, and work from there. If he is used to, for example, sitting on the couch to watch videos, maybe you both sit on the couch at the time videos would previously have been played, and making some kind of game/play on the couch to divert his attention. It probably wouldn't take more than a week or so for him to start engaging in more creative play, etc. Not an easy task, but well worth it, I think.
