Guest guest
I think that teaching words to read which have a high motivation is a good route to go. In other words choose the words that 1. have a reinforcing effect 2. are useful to the child 3. the child sees in his/her environment 4. the child knows receptively and expressively Depending on what level of language your student has you can work up to functional sentences like I want a cookie please. Can we go to the park? I think when you start teaching reading you should use the written word in your daily life like in 1. Schedules of your day 2. lists of things to buy like at the grocery 3. steps to do something Some people advice you to label things in the house. Well this didn't work for us because there was no motivation for wall or chair. But things like these steps had big motivation put on shoes ride in the car go to the library The key in the beginning is to make reading functional and useful to the child. Ideas for teaching: 1. Match the text word to the object. 2. Use scrabble tiles to put letters together to make a word. 3. Say the word and the student finds it in a field of other words 4. Match word phrases to pictures of activities. " The girl is riding a bike " 5. Put the words together like a puzzle to make a sentence and read them. So you want to work all the sense with the child when reading 1. hear the word and recognize it by pointing (hear/think/see) " Where is the word " car " ? " 2. see the word and match it to the object (see/think) " Match " 3. say the word when he reads it (see/say) " What does this say? " You might want to take a look at this book for developing your own customized reading program is Teaching Reading to Children With Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Teachers http://www.talkingwords.com > > > For those who have started or taught sight words, how did you >determine > > > > -- Which words to teach?
