Guest guest
Mindy, I do recall that at the first workshop by Dr. Carbone I attended he stated that this may be placed too early in the requesting targets. So, you may need to skip it and come back. However, for suggestions: 1)find a task like a puzzle/game etc your child is capable of doing independently and let them complete it then immediately prompt " look what I did " and reinforce with social praise " wow, you are great at puzzles " 2) Model some things kids usually point out their accomplishments in: getting the basketball in a hoop dress Barbie in a cool dress jump high on the trampoline dress up in a costume forward roll walk a straight line jumping in the air finish all their meal/snack paint/color a picture hop across a stick build a tall tower and then use one of the attention phrases yourself , then give your child a turn and prompt the same phrase These suggestions come from the observation of my neurotypical 3 and 7 year old daughters. We have not taught this yet, but, may begin soon - yesterday Grace( 4 with autism) said to me in the pool after paddling about three feet in her flotation suit " LOOK " She is once again prompting Mommy to teach a new skill! I look forward to others suggestions. Hi all My son is moving quite nicely through the ABLLS. However, we (his team) are stuck on F-7. The task is " requests attention. " Task Objective: the student will be able to ask others to attend to his actions. Question: Does the student ask others to attend to his actions (e.g., " Look at me, " " Watch this, " " Look what I did. " Examples: Call a person's name to get attention, raise hand, say " Look at me, " " Watch this, " " Look what I did. " We are not sure how to build a scenario or lesson that will help him achieve this task. Can anyone help? Thank you. Mindy List moderators: Jenn - ABAqueen1@... Steph - Stephhulshof@... Guest guest
Here's how we're doing it: This requires two instructors (eg., parents or therapists). As with all teaching, you establish an EO for something (eg., Barney). Teacher #1 will ask the student to complete a simple task such as drawing a simple picture, finishing a puzzle, etc.. Teacher #1 will then prompt the student to go over to Teacher #2 to get their attention (Eg., " Hey teacher! See what I did? " along with tapping on the leg). Teacher #1 should be using whatever prompting is appropriate. Teacher #2 should be pretending to be ignoring the situation, reading a book, whatever. Teacher #2 will not attend to the student until he/she properly mands for attention. After a proper mand, Teacher #2 turns around all excited and praises the student over their puzzle or picture and delivers Barney. Other forms of getting attention are -saying, " here! " when handing you something. -saying, " go it! " when grabbing something (eg., like picking an apple that was hard to reach) et. al.
