Workshop Description: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is recognized by

the Surgeon General as the only treatment for autism that is backed up

by scientific evidence demonstrating its effectiveness.

Surgeon General's Report -

tism

While there are many school-based ABA programs, few are influenced by

and incorporate B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior into their

programs. Using the analysis of language as a behavior that is under the

influence of the principles of operant conditioning provides a viable

model for helping children with language deficits. Research has

demonstrated that the application of these principles leads to the

development of functional communication skills, reduction in problem

behavior and an increase in social initiations.

This workshop will illustrate through extensive use of video how the

principles of ABA that emphasize the teaching of verbal behavior are

being applied effectively in classroom settings to teach children with

autism language and other important skills.

Specifically, participants will learn strategies to help them:

Build rapport with the learner

Select the most appropriate form of communication for a child

Capture and contrive motivation

Teach functional communication skills (manding)

Utilize behavioral principles to reduce and manage problem behavior

Provide individual and group instruction in the natural environment NET)

Transition learners from NET to intensive teaching (DTT)

Develop basic teaching templates for early, intermediate, and advanced

learners
