Guest guest
, I don't have any help to offer, I don't even live in Texas, but I will be praying for you and your son. I can only imagine how hard it must be for you. How old is your son? Did the behavior start before or after the medication changes? Can the doctor give you something to even sedate him for a little while so that you can get some sleep and some peace? Do you have family members that can either take him or his sisters for a while to help? I will be praying and I hope you find some help. Without a year + waiting list? I called a couple of hospitals greenville wouldnt take him neither would timberlawn. Timberlawn says they arent equipped and greenville says they cant take him because he is non verbal. They tell me denton state school but I really dont want to relinquish my parental rights without exhausting all other possibilities . however if I dont find some kind of help soon *I*am gonna need help. Guest guest
I am sooo sorry to hear this, ! I hurt for you and will be lifting you and your family up in prayer. The screaming, hitting, and biting automatically lead me to think that your son is in some serious pain. Does he have a history of GI pain? Have you pursued any biomed treatment? I hope there are others on this site who can help you and your family find some solutions to ease your suffering. Thinking of you! Guest guest
, I will most certainly keep you in my prayers. Have you tried Cook Children's in downtown Fort Worth? My daughter had a nervous breakdown about 4 years ago and nearly choked her then 3 year old brother. She isn't autistic but she is ADHD. I took her straight to the ER and she was admitted to the psych ward for 6 days. While she was there, there were several children on the spectrum. There was a child that was non verbal too. You might want to try there. I don't blame you for not wanting to take your child to the Denton State School. I have heard some horrible stories about that place. --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.

I am about to send my oldest to LA for a few days to get her a break and hopefully the youngest to houston . The fits and screaming come in waves . This time it started right after he was put on tenex ...which was supposed to help with teh hitting and agression and made it 10x worse . Then Imipramine ( Tofranil ) which did nothing. and changes in his risperadol. --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! Search. Guest guest
Well, I'm glad he's sleeping and your able to relax a bit yourself. I know how it is to not have family in the area. I'm in PA and my family is in Arkansas. My hubby has his parents near by but they aren't really able to handle young kids anymore and they certainly wouldn't be up for a situation like what you describe. I found a website for the ARC of Dallas, maybe you could contact them and they might be able to steer you somewhere for help. Here it is: http://www.arcdallas.org/ There are good people in this group and I'm sure someone will come through with some ideas for you. Get some sleep. Guest guest
I am sorry this is happening. You might want to find a good neurologist, maybe come to Dallas and talk about all the medications, how to wean him off some. They might be making him feel strange and he can't tell anyone. Another idea is to contact your MHMR center and speak with a supervisor/director. Tell them you need immediate emergency help. Sometimes they have funds available for emergencies they might be able to get you respite. See if they have an In-home Family support grant to help with respite. I hope you find some good resources for help soon. Nagla > > , > > He is asleep on clonidine...hopefully the night . No family in the area . Guest guest
Hi , I am so sorry for what you are going through and for your son. My daughter use to be agressive and we finally figured out that it was gut pain. She is non-verbal. We started treating her through the Homeopathy Center of Houston and our homeopath figured it out. They are addressing her gut as well as her entire timeline and as she has improved the agression is now minimal we see very little and it is now related to her getting mad about something and it is nowhere near the intensity that it was when she was in pain. http://www.homeopathyhouston.com/homeopathy_testimonials/homeopathy_te stimonials.html You may want to call All Church Home for Children in Fort Worth (817 335 4041). They do not offer in house respite care for children with autism but they may be able to have someone come to your home to help with your son. If they are unable to help you may want to call MHMR and see if they know of any services to help right now. > > My son has been through 3 medication changes in the past week and a half with nothing helping. Guest guest
Dear My heart goes out to you. I am so sorry that you are going through this. I do not live in your area, but I do have a couple of suggestions that you might want to try if you haven't already. Google the following (1)Children's Assessment Center (2)Contact Texas Childrens Hospital (Houston) and talk to someone on the Autism Center. A possible contact would be Dr. Sherrie Sellers. They may have a contact in your city. (3) I am not sure if you are receiving medicaid or not but they should be able to direct you to a child psychologist. (4) Is there and ARC in your area? (5) Contact Advocay Inc to see if they have referrals. (6) Houston as a center called IntraCare on Fannin that you may want to contact. In some cases children stay there until they are able to determine the proper medication and the current situation is under control Respite Your school district or local ARC should be able to give you some respite providers that can give you and the rest of the family a break. In the meantime, I hear of think of anything else I will email you. Marhoefer wrote: Hi What is the prescribing doctors position or suggestion. This is terrible. Guest guest
Hi , Tonya is correct about Claudette Fette, she was so instrumental in helping me with my . She is a neat lady. I am curious what type of doctor is changing your son's meds? We for awhile allowed regular MD's to prescribe AManda's meds. But when she went off the deep end about 6-8 months ago, and we took her to Cook's Children Hospital and spent a week on the psyc. floor. We started usin a phsycaritst to handle her meds. and no one else. We use a DR. Creason in Denton. I really like him. I stay in communication with him and he is open to some of my suggestions. Please feel free to contact me and I will share any numbers and names I have. . My heart goes out to you!!!!!!! It is hard to find respite and then to find people who can handle our children. We tried MHMR's respite, they kept long enough for us to make it home and call because they first saw she was on Valtrex and assume she had a contagious disease, and because of her spitting they thought they would get it.....what ever it is! There is a place in Houston called the " Texanna Center " or the BTTC. I was told it is for autistic, M.R. children with behavior problems. I have also been told it is very ABA oriented. I am considering it for this summer. You can google the name and read what it says. This is stepping out further to say, I understand the frustration. We as parents get tired, and as we get tired we forget the correct ways to handle our special angels. So as they react we counter react and life seems to spiral out of control. It has for us several times lately. PLease feel free to call, and vent. God knows your heart and He will give you strength to make it through this. I know because God has delivered us many times through times that seemed so dark and endless. Guest guest
I agree with a that you need to rule out other problems if feasible. However, I'm not surprised to see a negative reaction from any med that targets catecholamines. It's a minefield, and I'm speaking from experience. I found this: Pediatric Use Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients under 12 years of age have not been demonstrated. Therefore, the use of guanfacine in this age group is not recommended. There have been spontaneous postmarketing reports of mania and aggressive behavioral changes in pediatric patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) receiving guanfacine. The reported cases were from a single center. All patients had medical or family risk factors for bipolar disorder. All patients recovered upon discontinuation of guanfacine HCl. Hopefully, it will resolve quickly. I assume you've stopped the tenex. Clonidine is pretty similar. At our house for calming we use naturals such as GABA, Magnesium, 5 htp or L-theanine (I'm not a doc so please take it for what it's worth). Like rx meds, though, every child is unique. Good luck. Guest guest
Actually, MHMR is best for emergency treatment. If a doctor sees the child, in this fit, the doctor can then make emergency orders for the child so that he does not hurt himself or anyone else. Sounds like he is struggling really bad with all the medicines. Has an Autism psychiatrist seen the child? > > > > , > > > > He is asleep on clonidine...hopefully the night . Guest guest
I am sorry that your son is so ill. It seems to me that he might be on too much medication. I know that every child is different but my son is almost 14 and was diagnosed with Autism and Cerebral Palsy at age 3 and I have never given him any medicine, except for Children's tylenol when he has the cold and sometimes cough medicine. I too have no family around, and I know how hard this can be. Please, if you can try getting someone to come in and help you a few times a week, while you're taking care of your son. Have you tried reading to him, playing a video game with him, playing music, singing to him, changing his diet, giving him a nice long bubble bath, etc? MHMRA provides Respite Care and will give you a list of respite care providers. Please do not try and do it all on your own. You must make some time for yourself! May God continue to bless you and your family.
